I saw it again recently on TV and while its not IMO an outstanding boy movie it was worth another look.

Its fun to watch John Wayne being tough and fatherly as he breaks in several young boys as cowhands on a cattle drive.  It gets pretty grim near the end, with the Duke getting cruelly shot to death by the bad guys, and the boys subsequently avenging him and completing the drive.

I found only 2 familiar names among the boys - Nicolas Beauvy amd Robert Carradine.

The movie also contains my favorite John Wayne line:  "We're burning daylight!"

I absolutely *LOVE* this movie.

No, it's not a great example of filmmaking.

No, it does not feature any "boy skin."

However, the concept and execution are very appealing. The DVD edition includes a nice mini-documentary about the making of the film, including how the boys were cast.

Another classic boy name to add to your list: Clay O'Brien!!!!!

And, of course, a super-wonderful film score by John Williams.

A highly recommended film for one and all!

Clay O'Brien is one of my fave movie boys.  His first movie was The Cowboys, there are some interesting behind the scenes bits on the DVD, including Clay interviewing for the job.  Clay was alo in another Wayne movie, <i>Cahill, US Marshal</i> now if only that one and especialy <i>Apple Dumpling Gang</i> would make it to DVD I'll be a happy guy.
