Ponette (1996)
Directed by Jacques Doillon (French)

I only saw this French film once and it was when it first came out on video, so I need to see it again. I remember it as a fairly bleak film about a young girl and her brother (played by Antoine du Merle, I think) who have just lost their mother. The girl, Ponette, gets most of the screen time and she very convincing as a kid trying to deal with this painful loss. I believe the kids are in an orphanage of some sort, so there are other small boy roles in the film. Her brother, however, is by far the most prominent one and makes this film definitely worth seeing.

Hmm. I only saw the film once and it was when it first came out on video. I can't tell if that's him. I seem to remember that he was wearing eyeglasses in the film, but maybe I'm wrong...

I think I'm going to have to see this again soon.
