Boy Who Plays on the Buddhas of Bamiyan, The (2004

for uk viewers :

it's shown at 13.45 hours, channel 5 - easter sunday.
----------
here's preview (by pete clark) from the london evening standard's metro supplement :

the boy in question is eight-year-old mir for whom the phrase "bright as a button" might have been expressly coined.

mir and his displaced family live in the caves around the shattered remains of the great statues that were disgracefully dynamited by the taliban.

despite mir's brimming optimism - "i like americans", he chirps as a pair of attack helicopters buzz overhead - this examination of a year in his life is a tale of the monstrous idiocies of which mankind is capapble.

since the russians began the sorry saga by invading afghanistan, a proud and largely self reliant nation has disintegrated.

mir's grandfather points to the valley below :

"there were melons", he tells the boy.

"every melon was as big as a hug."

this is beautifully crafted and simply subtitled without an intrusive voiceover.

glorious countryside serves only to emphasise the messy doings of man.
