Signed, inscribed and dated: AETAT [AE in monogram]: SVAE [AE in monogram] ii 1650.IVO. [VO in monogram].

This portrait is signed with the painter's monogram and dated 1650; the age of the boy is recorded as 11. The boy is turned away from the spectator, looking to the left. The design is concentrated upon the face and its expression, and the colouring is muted, enlivened only by the fur of the muff and the hat.

On loan to the exhibition 'Making Faces' at the City Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol from January to April 2004, the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle from April to July 2004, and the National Gallery, London from July to September 2004.
