for anyone who hasn't seen it, top pic shows catamite (!) adoring a gymnast.

i went to a boarding school like IF - used to harbour similar homicidal fantasies, wanting to operate a machine-gun from a perch atop the chapel.

unfortunately there wasn't an armoury - enabling enaction of my fantasy.

for those who aren't familiar with IF - it may have been stimulated by an earlier french movie :
jean vigo's zero de conduite.

webster educational link below.

independent article about IF writer ditto.

i once sat behind lindsay anderson at an aldwych theatre matinée performance - peter brook's production of a midsummer's night dream.

[peter directed lord of the flies - 1963 version!]

AMSD featured two yummy teen twin brothers whose name escapes me.

see picks link below for production details.

or locate this book in an academic library :

The making of a Midsummer night's dream : an eye-witness account of Peter Brook's production from first rehearsal to first night
• By: David Selbourne
• Publisher: London : Methuen, 1982
• ISBN: 0413532305

lindsay had his feet sprawled over the seats in front of him.

presumably to indicate his bohemianism. Roll Eyes

McDowell to appear at festival tribute

PHIL MILLER, Arts Correspondent June 24 2004

A CELEBRATION of one of Scotland's most controversial film directors will be led by Malcolm McDowell, the veteran actor, at Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Lindsay Anderson's classic 1968 film If... heralded McDowell's big-screen debut and the actor will present a one-man show in honour of the ground-breaking director...

apple, I've seen both 'If'' and 'zero de conduite'. I suppose you'd have a different take on them, since you were at a boarding school during your younger years. Neither made me wish that I had been a boarding school student myself, though. I'm afraid I might have developed that machine-gun from a perch atop the chapel mentality, myself, enduring the strict discipline from staff or (in the case of 'If') older students as they portrayed it.

I might have enjoyed being one of the instructors in such a controlled environment, though. Smiley

Love,
Sir J

I went to a boarding school for a while. Worse than jail IMO...

... if the hardware had been handy and if I had been able to maintain sufficient control of my own mind in an environment which purposefully suffocated an individual kid's ability to think past the crucifix on the wall, I'd have enjoyed the opportunity to have expressed myself so emphatically.

I haven't seen 'If' since watching it at the cinema waaaay back when it was originally released. A couple of weeks ago I saw Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange (part of a Kubrick TV festival).. another extraordinary film that I'd not seen in yonks. He sure was one of the leading 'cutting edge' actors of his/my generation. Pity about his more recent projects.

I recall one bright note in that alarming movie - students felt free to say such things as "Bobby Phillips gets lovelier every day!" I wonder what Rupert Webster is up to now?

Popped up on TV the other day...

It is perfectly normal for the young boys to 'slave' for the 'whips' ... older boys who even have the authority to punish the youngsters with beatings.

Of the young boys... Sean Bury has the most screen time:

Michael Newport reminds me a bit of Rupert Grint:

This boy is washing his hair in the loo... I'm told it is still a popular way for Brits to wash. Smiley

I hope the loo was thoroughly flushed before his head was dunked in the bowl ewwww!:

Fine pics Cal, thanks! I'm really anxious to see this again sometime. I saw it about 3 times on pay cable back in the 80's and absolutely no showings since. I suppose it would be useless to query TCM about showing it.

Smiley I have seen again this movie this afternoon. I have like the very good play of Sean BURY in part of JUTE but also this one of Michaël NEWPORT and Robin DAVIES in parts of BRUNNING and MACHIN. My movie rating is 8/10 !
