Mind the Gap
2004

I liked this movie...
It consists of 5 stories, mostly with nothing to do with each other (except maybe in the common theme).  One story is about a single father and his son, Rocky, living in rural Vermont.  The boy is played by Christopher Kovaleski.

One day Rocky gets the idea that they will shave their heads, to look like Michael Jordan.

When Rocky's teacher is disapproving, his dad says... If the small things he wishes for cannot come true, how will he ever believe that the big things can?

It takes us a while to find out about dad's past, but it is an intesting story.

The other stories may have a boy here and there...

Sounds a lot like Magnolia in concept - only less surreal.
