Best Acting Role Top Ten and What If?

We already do top favorite films but I also like to do ten favorite acting role I seen in film by a boy actor.

There are some films I like better than the movies I got on this list.  But I think about most convincing acting of boys in a movie and when I see film I almost beleive it is the person in film not a actor.

1)  Sixth Sense  -  Haley Osment
2)  Shane  -  Brandon DeWilde
3)  Whats Eating Gilbert Grape  -  Leonardo Dicaprio
4)  Yearling  -  Claude Jarman Jr.
5)  Searching For Bobby Fischer  -  Max Pomeranc
6)  Jack The Bear  -  Robert Steinmiller jr.
7)  Second Best  -  Chris Cleary Miles
8 )  A Cool Dry Place  -  Bobby Moat
9)  Paradise  -  Elijah Wood
10) Ride A Wild Pony  -  Robert Bettles

I give good rating for five other films where boy is very good but something he do in film make me not put on list: 1) E.T. - Henry Thomas    2) Joshua's Heart - Matthew Lawrence    3) Champ - Ricky Schroder    4) Kramer vs Kramer - Justin Henry     5) Dennis the Menace - Mason Gamble

Yes, ET is a movie is very good that time Henry was a teenager but he became friends with an alien. I do remember watching that show when I was a baby that year. Dennis the Menace is the funniest movie that I ever seen when I was 11. Macaulay Culkin as his character Kevin is so funny.

Yes, there are so many. On your list, Jasen, I would agree that these acting jobs were unforgettable for me:
Sixth Sense  -  Haley Osment
Shane  -  Brandon DeWilde
Whats Eating Gilbert Grape  -  Leonardo Dicaprio
Searching For Bobby Fischer  -  Max Pomeranc

Others that occur to me at the moment are:
Great Expectations (1946) - Anthony Wager
Bad News Bears - Chris Barnes
Casey's Shadow - Michael Hershewe
Salaam Bombay! - Shafiq Syed
How Green Was My Valley - Roddy McDowall

and I will think of 20 more before the day is out, probably.  Wink As of this minute Leo DiCaprio in 'Gilbert Grape' strikes me as the best on the list. I can never forget Chris Barnes's natural acting in 'Bad News Bears.' I thought he was extremely believable as a cheeky little guy. (but lovable Smiley)

Teddy Bear I change question little bit so mabey it is easier.

If you have opportunity to convince owner of a new film studio that boy actors are as good as adult actors and he allow you to show him ten films to convince him you are right: what ten films do you show?

In movies I choose it has one film with boy only five year old and one boy is 15.  Most boys 8 to 12 in other films but it do show different age can act good too.

I not yet seen couple films you talk about YoungArthur . not Caseys Shadow or Salaam Bombay or Great Expectations with boy Anthony Wager.  I seen Great Expectations I think made 1998 but boy only in beginning of film.

I'm working on my answer Jasen, but right now I'd make that poor executive sit through 94 films  Shocked

I'll get back to you a little bit later on this.

Ok..  here's my list.

There are plenty more that I could have included...  but this lot are the ones that I recall as having the most impact on me performance wise:

20 actors in my short list:

Christian Bale_Empire of the Sun
Eamonn Owens_The butcher boy
Ivan Jandl_The Search
John Howard Davies_Rocking Horse Winner
Kolya Burlyaev_Ivan's Childhood
Jamie Bell_Billy Elliot
Hugh O'Conor_My Left Foot
Justin Henry_Kramer v Kramer
Haley Joel Osment_Sixth Sense
Anton Glanzelius_My Life as a Dog
Chris Marquette_The Tic Code
Salvatore Cascio_Cinema Paradiso
David Bennent_Tin Drum
Jean-Pierre Leaud_The 400 Blows
Roddy McDowell_How green was my valley
Brandon De Wilde_Shane
Trevor Morgan_Rumor of Angels
Ricky Schroeder_The Champ
Seth Adkins_When Andrew Came Home
Jackie Coogan_The kid

Not included in my list of 20 is Leonardo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape... because he was over 15, but it was one of the very best performances I've seen.

Cal I like movie you got on list and it is tv movie "When Andrew Came Home".  I think it deserve to be on my list but so many films to think about.  I dont see yet a lot of films on your list but some day I hope I can.

I read reveiws about movie "The Search" with Ivan Jandl and I wonder if it is on dvd yet?  I never read bad review about this film so I like to see it very much.

Alright Jasen, I'm giving up!  Grin

By ignoring the excellent performances that you, cal and YA have already mentioned, I got my list down to 50. But that's as low as I'm able to go.

Robert Bettles       -      Let The Balloon Go
Branden Nadon       -      Jet Boy
Jeff Sutton       -      Nature of Nicholas
Noam Zylberman       -      Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick
Rene Carlisle       -      Rebellion of Young David
Alex Svanbjerg       -      Rubber Tarzan
Frederik Christian Johansen       -      Someone Like Hodder
Kasper Andersen       -      Møv og funder
Pelle Hvenegaard       -      Pelle The Conqueror
Miikka Enbuske       -      Handcuff King
Georges DuFresne       -      Ma vie en rose
Gilles Budin       -      Blue Jeans
Nils Hugon       -      Comedy of Innocence
Ovidiu Balan       -      Mondo
Teufik Jallab       -      Killer Kid
Edmund Moeschke       -      Germany Year Zero
Tamas Meszaros       -      Abandoned
Eirik Evjen       -      Scars
Bartosz Idczak       -      Meska Sprawa
Sergiusz Zymelka       -      Where Eskimos Live
Artyom Bogucharsky       -      Lilja 4-ever
Ivan Dobronravov       -      Return
Juan Jose Ballesta       -      El Bola
Manuel Lozano       -      Eres mi héroe
Max Enderfors       -      Passing Hearts
Aaron Johnson       -      Tom & Thomas
David Bradley       -      Kes
Freddie Findlay       -      Feast At Midnight
Jack McElhone       -      Dear Frankie
Martin Stephens       -      Innocents
Sam Bould       -      Hollow Reed
Barret Oliver       -      DARYL
Bobby Driscoll       -      Window
Brad Renfro       -      Client
Corey Haim       -      Lucas
Freddie Bartholomew       -      Little Lord Fauntleroy
Jeremy Blackman       -      Magnolia
Jeremy Licht       -      Twilight Zone Movie
Joseph Mazzello       -      Cure
Mason Gamble       -      Rushmore
Michael Kramer       -      Over The Edge
Miko Hughes       -      Mercury Rising
Paul Franklin Dano       -      LIE
River Phoenix       -      Stand By Me
Robert Ri'chard       -      In His Father's Shoes
Sebastian Dungan       -      Man Woman and Child
Skip Homeier       -      Tomorrow The World
Ted Donaldson       -      Decision of Christopher Blake
Thomas Wilson Brown       -      Family Sins
Vladimir Kosyrev       -      Freedom Is Paradise

Even getting it down this far was a trial for me. There are just so many good performances.

Taking a different approach to your second question, in order to prove talent to that new studio owner, I would show him the complete works of Freddie Bartholomew, Bobby Driscoll, John Howard Davies, Joseph Mazzello, and Juan Jose Ballesta. I don't remember any of these guys ever giving a poor performance.

The ratings of young actors are often based on their ability to cry in front of the camera, hence the tendancy to use them in many tearjerkers without much interest.
There are however a few parts that truly justify these crying fits, and it is difficult not to admire the boys who are capable of it.
This is of course not the only way to judge a performance, which can also convey a sense of joy or happiness.
The overall impression must remain that the boy could simply not portray his character in a better way. So my own choice would be:

1. Seth Adkins: When Andrew came home
2. Tomas Fryk: Barnens Ö
3. Haley Joel osment: Artificial Intelligence
4. Robert J. Steinmiller, Jack the bear
5. Ricky Schroeder: the Earthling
6. Jeremy Sumpter: Peter Pan
7. Henry Thomas: E.T
8. Frederik Christian Johansen: Some like Hodder
9. Ronnnie Howard: the Courtship of Eddie's father
10. Billy Chapin: the Night of the Hunter

Keegan I never seen Barnens O film or other movie Som Like Hodder they must be films from other countrys.

But I do remember see Courtship of Eddies Father on TCM last year and now I wish I put on list because boy is very good actor and I think same boy I seen on tvland channel Andy Griffith.

Denmark and Sweden. Available on dvd and vhs only for Barnens Ö.

The courtship of Eddie's father exists on region 1 dvd and can easily be acquired. Vincente Minnelli at his best. You will feel like talking about it when you have seen the "golden fish" sequence.

There way too many movies to consider. I'm still finding awesome movies in the BA movie list that I completely forgot about.

I agree with just about all of the above movie choices. Each actor name and movie title I read brought a smile to my face, recalling their performances:)

I'll try to device a list of my own in the far future...it's gonna take a while:P
