Captains Courageous (1937)

I saw this over the weekend. It was very good  Freddie Bartholomew was vey impressive as Harvey as was Spencer Tracy as Manuel. I can see why he got the oscar for the role.. Manuel and Harvey's friendship was very touching and heartwarming. My dad read the book and said it was a lot different but he enjoyed the movie too. Has anybody seen the other movie versions of this?

Glad you liked it.

I've seen both versions. This one is the better of the two. Spencer Tracy is one of my all time favourite actors and Freddie was one of the best kid actors ever. I've only rated this movie 7/10... but that's pretty harsh... it probably deserves an 8.

One of the few great 'oldie' boy actor movies with an outstanding performance from Freddie Bartholomew. I thought to include him in 'The 5 Best Boy Actors in the World' currently posted in General Discussion.
Spencer Tracy said Freddie was great to work with and wasn't your usual precocious kid actor.
The still in bowser's post is where Tracy is calling the boy his 'leetle fish'.
Tracy got an Oscar for playing the Portuguese fisherman whereas it should have gone to Freddie for playing the rich man's brat.    Roll Eyes

I'll just bet he did!! Smiley
BTW, The MGM lion's name was Leo, if I'm not mistaken, he and Johnny Weisemeuller were the best of friends, one night Johnny was the last one to leave the studio, and noticed that Leo hadn't been put in his cage for the night, so Johnny took it upon himself to take Leo home with him, they had to stop at a traffic light in downtown Hollywood or L.A., and frightened some people along the sidewalk!

I saw a special on the Tarzan Story, movies, and tv series' a few years ago, it showed a pic of Johnny and Leo cuddling, and told that story about the scaring incident!
