1997 film from Norway.

Stars 9-year-old Thomas Jüngling Sørensen.

Growing up Jewish in Norway in the 1950s is hard enough for young Mendel (Sørensen), who has to cope with being different in an overwhelmingly Protestant country. It's made even more difficult by the fact that his family refuses to discuss the Holocaust or the reasons why they were forced to leave their native Germany for a comparatively harsh existence in Scandinavia. A serious and sometimes comic coming of age tale set in an environment not normally associated with Judaism.

Following World War II, Mendel (about nine years of age), his older brother, and parents relocate to Norway. Little Mendel struggles to adjust to his new environment, especially has trouble grasping things such as fish-balls, cod liver oil and Christianity. And, to complicate matters further, the lad is too young to recall the Holocaust and finds those around him who well recall the atrocity unwilling to explain.

I'll make a profile for this one, I've got the video, didn't realize we didn't have it profiled on the database.
