Sonny Boy was a great song by Al Jolson. We get to see a fragment of his performance.
The film (directed by Maria Peters) takes us through the early parts of the 20th century.
It is based on the book by Annejet van der Zijl and the events have all taken place in reality, although much of it is obviously romanticised.
Rika (played by Ricky Koole) is unhappily married to Willem (Marcel Hensema). When she finds out he is fornicating with the housemaid, she decides to leave him and asks her parents to give her and her four children shelter. Her father however had always been opposed to her marriage with Willem (in those years it was not done for a Roman Catholic to marry an orthodox protestant). Her brother, however, offers to help.
She meets Waldemar, a student from Surinam, who is looking for a place to live after his emigration from South America. It works out fine and eventually she falls in love with Waldemar.
They have to brave bad weather due to racism, and their friendschip is almost shipwrecked for that reason.
Rika is bearing Waldemar's child (baptised Waldy, but in the film he will mostly be referred to as sonny boy.)
In the years of World War II tragedy strikes. The end of the story is not altogether a happy one, but if you can control your tears, I would certainly recommend you to watch till the bitter end.
It was not difficult to select pictures for a gallery. Once the movie has taken its place in our database, I will probably rate it with an eight or possibly a nine. The only misgiving I have is the acting by Sonny Boy himself. That should have been coached a little better.
