Favorite films of the 40s and 50s

This was one of the great periods of film history. It also features the performances of some classic boy actors, as well as those that history might have forgotten.  What are your favorites from the 40s and 50s?

I'll get started with one

I think this one was somewhat unusual film for the time. Dean Stockwell is a natural. The messages are positive and would resonate today. And of course the bath scene a bit of which is in the trailer above.  Grin

I've gotten very rusty at posting in my advanced age  Smiley
Anyway, thanks for bringing up this subject again.
I came up with three of my very favorites out of oh, too many to remember or look up.

Two quite different movies from the 40's, very emotional, and starring my favorite boy of the period, Roddy McDowall:

and this excellent film from David Lean with Anthony Wager playing young Pip:

Anything with John Howard Davies would be worth watching. The Rocking Horse Winner is my favorite of his films.
I see so many films it's hard for me to list just a few favorites. Some of my favorites from that era that haven't been mentioned yet and have profiles are

Glamour Boy was particularly enjoyable with a movie within a movie plot concerning an aging (19) Jackie Cooper trying to convince the studio to do a re-boot of his Skippy character. With another star of the 30's, Jackie Searl, playing a character based on his movie persona. This is film is satirical for those who get all the in-jokes. Darryl Hickman is great as the new child star.

The classic film from the 50s is surely 'Shane' with Brandon de Wilde. He played his part very well as the homesteader's little boy, Joey.

What a shame that he passed away when he did.

I just love films from back in the early days of cinema!

Great films you all have already mentioned, but here are some more:

Bobby Driscoll

David Ladd

Billy Chapin

Slava Muratov

Claude Jarman Jr.

Bobby Henrey

And some other films that were great, but had only small parts for
the boy actors are:

Billy Gray

Michel Ray and Johnny Crawford

Subir Bannerjee

Great images!  Thanks!  I have this film somewhere.  If I can locate it, we'll screen
the film this weekend.

Wow!  The cast from this film looks like a Who's Who of Hollywood legends:
Walter Brennan, Phil Harris, Sidney Poitier, and George Chandler.
Produced by John Wayne.

nightwatcher: Brandon de Wilde in 'Good-Bye, My Lady' is a new one on me. I hadn't heard of that film and I notice Brandon is looking even better there ... lucky Walter Brennan.  Huh
I feel I have failed as a BA member for not remembering 'The Yearling' with an outstanding performance from Claude Jarman Jr. who, I believe, was awarded a special children's Oscar for his part and only right too.

This is one I'll be on the look out for. Whatever happened to Allen Martin Jr.? Handsome boy with a mysterious quality. He seems to have only appeared in two films.

Smiley Billy Gray and that movie was the subject of one of my first posts on this forum. I always felt a special closeness to Billy since we are almost exactly the same age.

This was a charming movie starring Michel Ray which won the Oscar for Best Story (I think they got rid of that award). Michel Ray is today worth 4.5 billion dollars!
