A Monster Calls: Lewis MacDougall

Okay, what's all this about a boy actor Lewis MacDougall who plays Conor O'Malley in 'A Monster Calls' about a boy with a dying mother who is bullied at school and doesn't like his grandmother. The 'monster' of the title is a giant Yew tree which speaks and threatens the boy though it turns out to be his ally. A critic in one newspaper gives it 4 stars out of 5 and writes: "The film is seen almost entirely from Conor's perspective. He is a sensitive, observant but petulant child, seething with resentment and baffled by the injustice of his mother's illness ... This is a subtle, cleverly crafted film which has a searing emotional impact precisely because it isn't scared to let the monster out - to acknowledge the boy's rage as well as his grief."
A new film to add to the ever growing list I trust and, possibly, a new boy actor.   Smiley

I saw this today and found Lewis McDougall to be endearing and a strong actor. He is on screen for pretty much the whole time. Hope to see him in more projects.

I said "I might see it tomorrow" back in January. Well, I saw it today, 10 months later. lol

It's very good. Lewis MacDougall is definitely able to cary pretty much the entire film on his shoulders.

I recently procured the DVD of 'A Monster Calls' and as long as you don't need cheering up this film will allow you to wallow in misery and gloom. In fact, the film is so gloomy the weather remains depressingly dull or raining all the time. Poor Conor O'Malley is beset with far too many problems for a 12 year old to cope with I would've thought: dying mother, missing father, overbearing grandmother (Sigourney Weaver doing a fine English accent) and bullying at school, I mean what more does he want? Well, apparently he wants a huge monster in the shape of a human/yew tree that has a rather destructive bent and dispenses words of wisdom like falling leaves.
Lewis MacDougall provides marvellous acting ability as his character has to go through numerous emotions as he desperately comes to terms with his mother's approaching death. It's only when pop finally turns up out of the blue from America that a ray of sunshine can penetrate the stifling gloom. An enjoyable film, up to a point, but after watching it you feel like reaching for a comedy film to take away your depression.
The DVD is rather sparse with extras with all too brief appearances by Lewis.
I see Lewis also played in 'Pan' alongside Levi Miller's Peter Pan.

I just read that Lewis' mother died in 2013 from MS, right before the shooting for this film. Very sad, I am guessing that made the script especially poignant for him, perhaps part of why he gave such a strong performance.

I didn't find it depressing at all. I thought it was beautiful and very real. It also has a happy ending (sort of). I'd much rather watch something like this than a fake "feel good" movie. Those are the movies that usually make me want to kill myself. lol

Aren't you going to punish me?
What could possibly be the point in that?
