The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981)




Marc Gilpin stars as Young John Reid (AKA: The
Lone Ranger) in the prologue to the film.  Unfortunately
he is only in the first five minutes of the film.

Too bad because the movie has a particularly gritty and
harsh beginning and starts off with a bang.  The beginning is
so good that it actually makes the film feel like it's
dragging along once we snap up to the present when
John Reid has grown up.

Would have been great to view this up on the big screen
at the Drive-In. 

Shot in Panavision (AKA: Scope) by Laszlo Kovacs.

Also starts Christopher Lloyd and Jason Robards.

Patrick Montoya plays Young Tonto (his only credit
on IMDb).

This would have been a great film if they would have stayed with Marc Gilpin
and Patrick Montoya as the leads.  Drop The Lone Ranger storyline
and make the film a western about a kid seeking revenge for the murder of his
family with his Indian friend along for the ride.  Add in the old Indian Shaman
dispensing wisdom to the two lead characters and then the crooks finally getting
their just rewards and *BAM*, you've got a pretty good story.  No wait, don't
mention The Lone Ranger connection until the very end of the film.  At that
time let the audience realize that the kid grows up to be The Lone Ranger.  I
like it!

The photography was excellent!  Shot on (what is now considered vintage but back
then was state-of-the-art) Panavision 2.35 lenses.  These lenses produce fantastic images
and have a wonderful tendency to flare.  These and other great vintage lenses available
for rental in the LA area.  Worth every penny!

Yes, Marc is no longer available, but.  There are plenty of up-and-coming actors
who could be tapped for the role.

That reminds me of the film Texas Baby (1975) AKA: L'ostaggio

The entire cast was a bunch of kids ages 6-13.  The film had Indians, the Sheriff
and his deputies, a saloon with dance hall girls, and the best bar room brawl ever
put on film.  The brawl lasts almost eight minutes and did I mention the fight
is done by 6-13 year olds?

I'll have to put up some screen caps.  Hmm. . . that means a trip into the
Archive Room to find the dvd.
