The Dark Tower

I went to see The Dark Tower, the new movie based on the fantasy series by Stephen King. It stars Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers.

The first three books of the series are pretty good. I lost interest with the fourth book and never finished it.

The movie doesn't really follow the story in the books. It's more inspired by it, almost like another variation on the same themes. It wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. Tom Taylor is pretty cute, even if I would have liked to see a younger actor play the role of Jake.

Stephen King certainly likes boy characters in the stories he writes. Tom Taylor is very good looking, missing tooth and all.   Wink

I'm wondering why he's missing a tooth! he looks too old to still be loosing baby teeth!

I really enjoyed this movie!  Tom Taylor was great alongside Idris Elba.  They
had great chemistry together.

The way Tom Taylor  played the part and his not having
all his teeth made the character seem younger.

Matthew McConaughey played an exceptionally good 'bad guy'.

Even if you haven't read the books (like me), the movie stands
up well as a great fantasy film.  Can't wait to see it again on BD.

Recommended for fantasy film buffs

Tom Taylor has a couple of appearances in Legends (2014–2015)
with Sean Bean.  Available on Netflix.

And he's in the Doctor Foster (2015) series, also available on Netflix.

Critic reviews

Elba is genuinely great as the tormented Roland, but the film does its best to suffocate him under a mountain of plot-heavy nonsense. Disappointing.

About the only thing holding it together is Idris Elba, whose irrepressible magnetisim and man-of-stone solidity anchors this mess but can’t redeem it. Full review

Oh my gawd, Tom Taylor is doomed. The estimable film critics have panned it. No cinema visits from BA members after the great critics have given their godlike verdicts. DVD sales will be down. This is a calamity, what are we going to do, 'bowser', 'Boymoviebuff and my fellow BA members?    Undecided

I get the feeling that a lot of the bad reviews are from die-hard Stephen King fans
who thought the movie didn't embody the material in the books.  Which it didn't!

It was a stand alone film based on the book series.

I loved it!
