OT: List your favourite novels featuring boys

I used to read a lot of novels, but then life got really busy and I didn't  have time to read as much. Lately, though, I have started listening to audio books during my commute to and from work, which means I am getting back into novels.

Some of my favourite novels featuring boy characters are (in no particular order)...

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
The Talisman by Stephen King
The Waste Land (Dark Tower part 3) by Stephen King
It by Stephen King
Jumper by Steven Gould
Boy's Life by Robert R. McCammon

I'm looking for similar book recommendations. Obviously skewing more toward sci-fi and fantasy, but open to any other genre as long as there's a boy protagonist.

Off the top of my head...

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - Mark Twain
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain
Whitey - Ernest Claes
The Guardians - John Christopher
My Father's Glory, My Mother's Castle, The Time of Secrets, The Time of Love - Marcel Pagnol (memoirs really, rather than novels, but completely wonderful)
The Brothers Lionheart - Astrid Lindgren, illustrations by Ilon Wikland

I don't know much sci-fi, to be honest.

I'm hoping soon to read Astrid Lindgren's Mio, My Son. It will probably be impossible to imagine Mio and Jum-Jum as anything other than Nicholas Pickard and Christian Bale! Below is the front cover of a first edition, well beyond my price range...

I love boy stories! I'm not so swift on the ones authored by women though, because no matter how hard they try, they will never truly know what it's like to be a boy! and that's why you'll probably never find a boy book written by a woman like ones by King, Card, or Golding! As far as I'm concerned they just don't have the ability to capture what it is like to be a boy. they also tend to be too politically correct for my tastes! I'm not saying that women don't write good stories about boys, I like the 1st Potter book, it's just not one of my favorites!

The very first boy book I read was called Where the Red Fern Grows! I was attracted to the story, a friend loaned me the book back in the 1980s, I was amazed at how an author could capture the essence of what a boy on a farm in Oklahoma in the early 20th century, went through to obtain and raise two Red-bone Blood Hounds! I was so impressed with the story that I read it another 3 time that year! to this day I still remember some of the details of the story. I'm convinced the story is most likely based on Rawls' own childhood, you can feel the passion and love in his writing for those two dogs! The story is set about 15 miles up the Illinois river from Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Wilson Rawls also wrote a book called Summer of the Monkeys! an interesting read for anyone!  Smiley

Thanks for all the suggestions. A lot of them are not available as audiobooks, but there are some good ones in there.

I wish it was possible for me to re-read Ender's Game for the first time. I'm really looking for a book that will give me that same feeling, but I don't know if I'll ever find one. It's hard to describe what that book does to me.

I haven't read Ender's Game yet, but I don't think I'll like the story, because I didn't like the movie so much! I loved Asa's and Aramis' performances, but I didn't like the plot. Ender was tricked into committing genocide! The movie was not enjoyable for me, so I don't see how I'd like the book any better!

Stephen King's The Body, is a very good read! I saw the movie several times before I read the novel, and as I read, I envisioned the actors from the movie into the story, same as I did with Where the Red Fern Grows! In pictured James Whitmore AS Grandpa, and all the other actors as their respective characters. I like to do it this way, for a couple of reasons, one, I get to mentally place the actors that played the characters, in them as I read! And two, You most likely won't find very many movies that are based on books, that have absolutely every detail of the book in them! so like I've stated before, I won't read the book a movie is based on, before I see the movie, because for me, it would spoil the experience, because I'd watch it with the expectation of everything from the book being in it! I did try it the other way around, so I know this is how I like to do it. Smiley

I really enjoyed Ender's Game (2013).  Asa Butterfield was excellent and I
wish Ben Kingsley would have had more screen time.

The movie tried to incorporate so much of what was in the book that they didn't
have time to develop all of the story lines.  I would think that if you had not read
the book before seeing the movie that you would not fully understand what was
really going on in the movie.

The story in the book was so complex that it would have made a great
trilogy of films (or even five or six installments).

The book is way more graphic in the violence than the movie was.
