He is prodigious in the tv series 'Manifest' (2018). He has to portray a boy facing fatal illness without being maudlin, as other actors have done (Robbie Kay, Joseph Mazzello). Challenging enough. But Messina's character 'Cal' also has to navigate supernatural twists & turns. The supernatural plotline in 'Manifest' is corny I think, except for the many interpersonal ironies. 11-year-old Cal has a twin sister, but after Cal passes through a mysterious time portal, his twin is now five years older than him. So is his best friend, who is now dating his sister when just yesterday, from Cal's point of view, they both were at the 'girls have cooties' age. On top of that, Cal now has the gift of cryptic prophecy and he's smarter and wiser than all the adults around him. Messina's naturally supernatural eyes are truly the portal into Cal's soul as he knocks every curveball thrown at him out of the park, facing both natural and supernatural questions of his own mortality and a cosmically uncharted landscape of puberty. So: dying kid, space-time anomaly, cutie pie, and Tween Jeremiah. If ever a boy actor held the whole show together! Without the lucky break of discovering Messina, 'Manifest' would just be silly. Many kid actors from the Depression Era served in WWII. Both boys lived in very nice homes. Bartholomew's house at 226 Tilden Street is valued at $4 million today and the 'golden child' Thomas lived in a splendid home with his actor parents in North Hollywood.
