The Reflecting Skin (1990)
Directed by Philip Ridley
Boy actor : Jeremy Cooper
This is a very strange and lyrical film about a boy who believes the beautiful widdow who lives nexdoor is a vampire. Actually, "nextdoor" seems like half a mile away, as the film is set in the country somewhere (it looks like the Canadian Prairies to me - and that may be where it was shot - but it's actually set somewhere in the U.S., during the 50s or 60s).
Seth, the lead character, is around 10 years old. His friends are getting killed one by one by a sexual predator who drives around in a black car, but Seth is convinced that his neighbour is to blame. His older brother (played by the handsome Viggo Mortensen, who recently played in The Lord of the Rings) falls in love with the woman in question and Seth is worried that she will eventually kill him too.
Beautiful to look at, this film nevertheless might be too weird for some. There's a weird subplot involving what seems to be a mumified foetus, which Seth believes to be an angel. Also, the melodramatic ending is way overdone and made me cringe. Still worth a look, though.
