The Reflecting Skin (1990)
Directed by Philip Ridley
Boy actor : Jeremy Cooper

This is a very strange and lyrical film about a boy who believes the beautiful widdow who lives nexdoor is a vampire. Actually, "nextdoor" seems like half a mile away, as the film is set in the country somewhere (it looks like the Canadian Prairies to me - and that may be where it was shot - but it's actually set somewhere in the U.S., during the 50s or 60s).

Seth, the lead character, is around 10 years old. His friends are getting killed one by one by a sexual predator who drives around in a black car, but Seth is convinced that his neighbour is to blame. His older brother (played by the handsome Viggo Mortensen, who recently played in The Lord of the Rings) falls in love with the woman in question and Seth is worried that she will eventually kill him too.

Beautiful to look at, this film nevertheless might be too weird for some. There's a weird subplot involving what seems to be a mumified foetus, which Seth believes to be an angel. Also, the melodramatic ending is way overdone and made me cringe. Still worth a look, though.

(Star Galaxy has some nice pics.)

I recall seeing this movie on TV and being drawn in by the mood and overall tone of the film.  And the boys were nice to see.

But you are right - it is wierd.  Afterward, I felt disturbed in a way that few movies have affected me.  Maybe thats what the director was after.

I love this movie...

It was, indeed, filmed in Canada.  But set in the US.  In fact, Idaho: as you can see if you're quick from the sheriff's police car.

Written and directed by Philip Ridley... also director of another strange movie, THE PASSION OF DARKLY NOON (not involving boys, though).

I seen that movie a very long time ago on a very late night show.
I came in after it had already started but when I seen the boy I decided to stop channel changeing and see wht it was about....guess it might have made more sense to me had I seen the beginning...but then sometimes I don't need to make sense of a movie, just as long as there is a handsome boy in it Smiley

Saw this one this past weekend also. Truly weird.

In places the acting was off. Cute boy, though.

I guess we all concur on the term "weird" Tongue

It's hard to spot a message, a good theme or golden thread. The leading boy did a pleasant job. Plotwise, however, I was lost. The dialogues and characters were just as weird as the story :/
