Khaled is a Canadian movie which also looks to be worth checking into. The summary reminds me of "Cross My Heart" only with more edge; I only hope the film as good as it sounds. Since I also came across this film at the Karlovy Vary website, I am using their description.

Ten-year-old Khaled lives with his seriously ill mother in a cheap flat. The hardened, combative and brave kid learned long ago that it’s no good trusting in those around you. And so when his mother dies he leaves her lying in her bed and acts as if nothing has happened. But he’s got to pay the rent and utilities, get rid of a social worker who comes knocking at his door, and even mend his own pants. Regardless of the struggle, Khaled is determined to wage a quiet war against the outside world and keep his secret as long as possible. This drama by Asghar Massombagi can be taken as a one-of-a-kind thriller, as well as the poetic story of a young outsider, discriminated against because of his social position and racial difference. Shot digitally and with a minimum of funds, the film has the real feel of the everyday as it is played out on Toronto’s Alexandra Park housing estate. And yet the mingling of a child’s ingenuous perceptions and the (literally) physical presence of death radically alters our accustomed take on the world.

Michael D'Ascenzo plays Khaled. The imdb says he played Hocus in "I Was a Rat", so maybe mbch will comment on his skills. Richard Banel is also in the cast list, although his role doesn't appear to be major.

This one played here at the cinema and I missed it. I am hoping with all my heart that it is released on DVD, or else I may never forgive myself for not having gone to see it while it was playing. Grrr.

R1 DVD can be ordered at (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I ordered my copy today and haven't ordered with them before, so am not sure about their service. Assume they are ok though. Price is USD 19.72 excluding shipping and handling.

Will write a review once I received my copy and have the time to do so.

Zabladowski, did you ever get to see this one?

It would be nice to see a cap or two from it.

Thanks.

I saw Michael Kanev as the side-kick in "Saint Ralph".
I found that he was also in "Khaled", so I rented it.
But wow is was Michael D'Ascenzo that is the big star here!
Subsequently I also rented the "Super Rupert" TV series, and Michael D'Ascenzo is deliciously slimy as the bully.

P.S. I still haven't seen much of Michael Kanev.  Still waiting for "Elliot Smelliot"...

EXCELLENT caps!

Thanks much, hosenhaus.

"Saint Ralph" is another film that has been on the wish-to-see list for quite some time.  With Kanev in the film, it is definitely one that is worth seeking out.
