Pure is a 2002 release from Great Britain which has been playing the festival circuit. I first heard about it while looking through the Toronto festival catalog, though it has played elsewhere since. According to IMDB it will be in general release in the UK in May. The film is directed by Gilles MacKinnon who previously filmed "Small Faces" and stars Harry Eden, who has been getting notice here for his recent TV work, as Paul. Vinnie Hunter has a smaller role as Lee, his little brother.
The synopsis for the film is courtesy of the Berlin Film Festival.

Upton Park is a rundown area in London’s East End where ten-year-old Paul, his younger brother, Lee and their mother, Mel, live. Since the death of their
father, Mel has been on heavy medication – “for her nerves”, as she says. Paul does his best to look after his mother and his brother, but Mel is teetering pretty close to the edge.
Lenny is also looking out for Mel. He was a friend of Mel’s husband and was
best man at their wedding. He had a soft spot for her, even back then. Lenny is a well-known dealer and pimp in their neighbourhood who also keeps
Mel supplied with heroin. When Paul one day discovers the dead body of
a friend of his mother’s, he suddenly realises what Lenny is all about and
what he has done to Mel – turned her into a junkie.
After mother and son have a blazing row about her addiction, Mel makes a
desperate attempt to come clean. She takes her youngest, Lee, to her inlaws
and asks Paul to help her: he is to lock her into her bedroom and keep
Lenny and his drugs away from her.
But the demands Paul’s mother places upon him are just too much for him
to handle. Lonely and depressed, he befriends a pregnant young waitress
named Louisa; she comforts him and they manage to spend a couple of
carefree hours together. But his happiness is short-lived. One day, Mel is
arrested and Paul is sent to live with his grandparents. Distraught, he begs
Louisa for a little heroin. When Mel discovers her son high on drugs one day, she suddenly realises the full extent of the calamity she has brought
upon her family. She embarks upon a course of treatment – but if she is to
shake off Lenny and his dope once and for all she will need Paul’s help one more time. . .

Thanks for the great synopsis, Zab. I can tell already that I'm going to see this movie, and wish that I could adopt little Paul and get him away from all of that.

I'm not one to think of movies as just movies. I always fall in love with the characters, if they're little ones who need an AF who cares.

Love,
Sir J

I noticed that Pure will be showing at the Sydney Film Festival on June 15th and 16th.

Other films screening in Sydney that I would consider seeing were I an Aussie are: Broken Wings, Stevie, and which are already profiled in our database.
