Edges of the Lord (2001)

I know there are already a couple of reviews here, but here's mine.

Edges of the Lord

I just got my copy of Edges of the Lord from Brazil.  Now I know why it hasn’t been released in the US.  I can only guess that the production values just aren’t up to the standards that Haley’s ‘people’ want.  That being said I’d still recommend this movie.

The story is basically about a 12 year old Jewish boy who is sent from his family in order to avoid death in WW2 Germany.  He spends his time with a Polish family.  From there the plot line is rather fragmented.  Side lines include bully boys, a sexually precocious 12 year old girl and an eight year old who, through the inspiration of a study game, assumes the role of Christ, including, at the end of the movie, self sacrifice.  Willem Defoe has a decidedly lesser role to Haley, almost to the point of wondering why he gets second billing.  Haley and Liam Hess (the young Christ) are the central figures.

The direction and cinematography are a bit weak.  But Haley’s and Liam’s characters are well done, and Haley gets some decidedly dramatic scenes.  The second half of the movie improved a bit and I felt was a bit more watchable.  Over all I’d recommend it for fans of our genre.

Good review, Cameron.  :bigok:

I'll second your recommendation again, too. I think it's a must-watch for everyone here, just as you do, when they get a chance. Smiley

Love,
Sir J

Thanks Cameron,

I think it's a pretty decent movie...

...as far as I know, it was originally made as a TV movie so it wouldn't have had a huge budget.

For those of you in North America who didn't get the Region 0 DVD that was available in Brazil, it seems that the film has finally been released on Region 1 DVD!

I was at a video store today and I saw it there in the new release section.

Available from Amazon and, I'm sure, numerous other sources. They redesigned the cover for this editing. It looks like this:
