I just finished watching the 2004 National Spelling Bee coverage on ESPN2. According to the ESPN2 website this program will air again tomorrow from 11:00am to 1:00pm presumably Eastern time but check your local listings. You will definitely want to share in the joy of watching new champion David Tidmarsh win his title!!!!!

there's a radio programme at 23.30 hours BST (british summer time) - about the spelling bee.

it says it's a repeat so it might be from a previous year.

it can be listened to live on the site.

it's now 19.25 hours in the uk

the programme begins in four hours and five minutes from the time of this post.

I turned it on in time to see the final 3 contestants as they did the last 5 rounds or so, and they were all wonderful boys. I was rooting for young David, though, and I swear I was as excited as he was when he won. Grin

Okay, maybe not, but I do believe that was the most excited I've ever been watching a boy compete for a prize, and actually seeing him win it. Wink

My brother was here watching the last couple of rounds with me, and he said "Okay, okay, calm down. He's not your kid." Hehe. Silly man. Roll Eyes They're all my kids when I'm watching them and rooting for them, whether in a contest or in a movie. Grin

Love,
Sir J

I'm glad you were able to see it, Sir J.

These shows get repeated every now and again. David's win was definitely something to see.

A comment I read on another forum summed up my feelings on this quite well.

It's always fun watching stuff like this - when you have kids who have no
inhibitions about the emotions they're displaying in public and who have no
fear of "wearing them raw" in public.

David was a real joy to watch in the last two final rounds - his nerves, his
near-tears knowing how close he was, and his tearful joy when it was all
over. You just had the feeling you were watching a nice kid you'd love to
know. His family can be proud, as indeed all those families of those kids
can be.

I hope anyone who didn't see this message in time and subscribes to ESPN2 makes it a point to see this year's competition.

While I hope that someone eventually uploads a clip of the final moments of the bee, in the meantime I have found some more pictures of our expressive champion....

I heard that David passed out while in the middle of a word then got back up and finished it...correctly! Grin Of coarse, I did hear this from a not-too-reliable source. Undecided

Oh. That picture up at the top reminds me of Adam Hann-Byrd

Of coarse, I did hear this from a not-too-reliable source.

Well, let's just say that your source gets some of the details wrong. Wink

There was one of the other finalists on the last day who did pass out during a word, then get back up and spell it correctly. But, young David just took his time and asked many questions (as they all did), then spelled out the words with his finger on the back of his card, before spelling each of his words correctly.

He did seem to be almost hyperventilating during the long, drawn-out spelling of his last word, though, and I thought I was gonna pass out, myself, if he didn't get it right. Grin

Love,
Sir J

P.S. - Beautiful caps, Zab! Thanks.

Very charming pics Smiley I guess when victory seems near the anxiety really increases! I was once 1 of 4 finalists in a local spelling bee and I sorta remember. I came in third. Tongue
