Rocking Horse Winner, The (1950)

Produced by John Mills(!)
Directed by Anthony Pelissier
Based on the short story by D.H. Lawrence

I’m in a state of shock!  This is a truly superb film and I had forgotten how good it was, and in so many ways.  It is so many things;  a parable of the consequences of greed,  a story of the lengths to which a sensitive youngster will go to please a parent, and a brilliant supernatural tale, intelligently done.  John Howard Davies gives a compelling and appealing performance as the youngster who finds a magical means to riches at a terrible cost.  What an amazing young actor he was - and how I loved that rich mop of blond hair and those incredible eyes. Smiley

The photography and lighting is exquisite, beautiful black & white, on a par with ‘Night of The Hunter.’ The DVD transfer is flawless. (and I'm sorry, Chucky, but this has got to be the scariest child's toy in the history of film)

This is a jewel.

I really want to see this. I read the short story it is based on and it was really good. Looking forward to those caps, YA. The boy is cute, but that rocking horse is creepy!

Oh, I've wanted to see this one for a long time, too!  Excellent review, YoungArthur!  Thanks for bringing it to our attention, and for doing the caps from it.  :bigok:

Love,
Sir J

I've seen it on TV several time many years apart. The most recent print I saw was rather scratchy and past it's 'due by' date. I'm pleased to see that the movie has been preserved and from the quality of  YA's caps one can see they have done a great job.

Perhaps I'll change my rating of 8/10 for the movie if I get a chance to see it in it's restored state. Movies like this can be seen again and again because they truely are works of art.

I watched 'The Innocents' again last night. It too is one of the greatest and creepiest B&W movies. It never fails to give me the shivers and I always seem to discover something extra each time I watch such great movies.

anyone with manual dexterity can learn to carve a rocking horse.

a carving course held at the latter of the two following links (rockinghorse.co.uk) received a glowing review which i can't locate at present.

i think it might have been in the weekend section of the daily telegraph.

a journalist attended their 3-day carving course; she said it was exceptionally good.
