Now that the Olympics rule the TV channels and again show that sports is universal, a binding element and pure emotion I thought a topic on boys in sports was appropriate.

Because there were many: we had the Bad News Bears, the Mighty Ducks and the Little Giants. We also had some Angels in the outfield, in the endzone and in the infield. And we had many animals like Soccer Dog, Air Bud, MVP and MXP. Sports like baseball, basketball, football and of course soccer.

I have come to like these kind of movies although most of them just have a simple storyline, are simple to follow and very predictable. But they also show what people binds together and that with a lot of effort and working together a lot can be reached. Because in all these movies, in the end, victory is there. And this is the same in every culture and every country: for the USA it's The Ducks, the Bears and the Giants. Germany has 'Die Wilden Kerle' and in the Netherlands the highest goal is to get 'in Oranje'.

Mexico has its own team: Atlético San Pancho. A team that starts from scratch and wants to compete for the Coca Cola Cup. In the beginning the results are poor but with a lot of endurance and perseverance the team manages to reach the finals in one of the biggest soccer stadiums in the world: the Azteca Stadium with 120,000 seats. No need to say that in the end they manage to win the finals and beat their opponents.

Atlético San Pancho is a very enjoyable movie, one of the first Mexican movies I ever saw. The story is not just about victory on the field, but also about friendship, love and rivalry (the two team captains wish to date the same girl).

Very much recommended if you like these kind of stories. The movie has been released on DVD R4 but unfortunately without English subtitles. Question for you: what's your favorite sports movies and why?

Wow, this looks like a good one, 'soles!  I wish it had English subtitles.   Undecided

I love these kinds of movies, too.  I guess my favorite was 'Sandlot', though I've enjoyed all of those that you mentioned.

Love,
Sir J

Great caps soles.

I enjoy these sort of flicks too. Sport is a way of life for many kids in my part of the world so I'm rather surprised that we haven't produced a decent boy/sport flick. Unless the first half hour of 'Swimming Upstream' qualifies.

I'll check on the BA database and use the 'sort by ratings' option to see which genuine sport movie I've given the highest rating to....

After checking ....
...the original  'Bad News Bears' appears to be my highest rated boy/sport movie...  8/10
'The Sandlot' is next with a 7/10.

Yeah, Searching for Bobby Fischer was always my favourite "sport" movie as well, hehe. Not sure if it counts, though. It seems a little bit more subtle and artful than those movies usually are. Billy Elliot is another good one, again if ballet can be seen as a sport.

Speaking of Bobby Fischer, though, (and sorry to take this off topic) those who have seen the movie know that in 1992 he disappeared without a trace. Well, he did resurface some years later, most notoriously after Septerber 11, when he praised the attacks on a radio interview.

These days, he's fighting to stay in Japan which now threatens to deport him.

Thanks for the caps, 'soles. They're very nice.

Thanks for the caps, 'soles.

I couldn't think of any specifically sports movies with boys other than the ones mentioned by Cal & Josephk, which are indeed favorites of mine. I thought 'The Sandlot' especially had a fine ensemble of good-looking boyactors.  I also enjoyed the baseball segments from 'D.A.R.Y.L.'  I would nominate Barret Oliver as the cutest boy in a baseball uniform.

Rediscovered this thread with those awesome caps from 'soles'...

... an appropriate 'bump' in recognition of the start of the Soccer World Cup yesterday.

Warner Home Video has World Cup fever as well. They've just released this film in Region 1.

What was the film in which an 8 or 9 year old boy played football (soccer to the western world), and ended up on the nation's team?   It was pure fantasy for a child that young to play with adults, obviously.... but the title seems impossible to remember.

A google search brings up a trillion World Cup sites, but this review must be out there somewhere.

THANK YOU Zabladowski.

For some reason, it didn't seem to be such an old film, but this Swedish picture is definitely the one.

Your help on this one is MUCH appreciated.
