Now that the Olympics rule the TV channels and again show that sports is universal, a binding element and pure emotion I thought a topic on boys in sports was appropriate.
Because there were many: we had the Bad News Bears, the Mighty Ducks and the Little Giants. We also had some Angels in the outfield, in the endzone and in the infield. And we had many animals like Soccer Dog, Air Bud, MVP and MXP. Sports like baseball, basketball, football and of course soccer.
I have come to like these kind of movies although most of them just have a simple storyline, are simple to follow and very predictable. But they also show what people binds together and that with a lot of effort and working together a lot can be reached. Because in all these movies, in the end, victory is there. And this is the same in every culture and every country: for the USA it's The Ducks, the Bears and the Giants. Germany has 'Die Wilden Kerle' and in the Netherlands the highest goal is to get 'in Oranje'.
Mexico has its own team: Atlético San Pancho. A team that starts from scratch and wants to compete for the Coca Cola Cup. In the beginning the results are poor but with a lot of endurance and perseverance the team manages to reach the finals in one of the biggest soccer stadiums in the world: the Azteca Stadium with 120,000 seats. No need to say that in the end they manage to win the finals and beat their opponents.
Atlético San Pancho is a very enjoyable movie, one of the first Mexican movies I ever saw. The story is not just about victory on the field, but also about friendship, love and rivalry (the two team captains wish to date the same girl).
Very much recommended if you like these kind of stories. The movie has been released on DVD R4 but unfortunately without English subtitles. Official website for the movie:
