capturing images from DivX files?

Does anybody know how to capture still images from DivX files. I've tried everything I could think of with all the software I have installed and nothing works.

There are a few things I'd like to share with you guys, and it's frustrating not to be able to show images from these movies I only have in that format.

Please help!

You can load them into Animation Shop (comes as part of Paint Shop Pro - free demo is available). Once in Animation Shop, you can save individual frames.

You might have to use another utility to chop the DivX file into smaller pieces though, as there is a limit on how large a file Animation Shop can handle (I think this depends on your RAM and swap file size, actually).

What computer?
On my Mac, I run the file through "Divx Doctor" and then I can treat it just like a MOV file in Quicktime.  In particular, copying frames.

Ugh, I wish I had a Mac, but I'm stuck with this PC for now.

As for Animation Shop, I guess I could try that, but I'd have to download and install the demo of Paint Shop Pro, software I'm not really interested in otherwise. And if it's a demo, I'm assuming it expires eventually?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. If anyone knows of any other way, please let me know.

I play divx files with BS Player which is able to do captures.

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I also use BS Player and it doesn't do captures of DivX files. It claims that it can, but when I do it all I get is a white image.

Oh, nevermind. I played with some settings and it works now. Should have tried that earlier.

Thanks.

I've used Animation Shop to get some good captures...  it's pretty time consuming though.

I think BS player does a good job and it's a much easier method. I also think that the 'modified classic media player' works pretty well as does 'Crystal Player'. All three are probably found readily available and free of charge, via a 'google' search.

Well I made the caps for The Reflecting Skin and Where Is the Friend's Home (in gallery upload section) with BSPlayer. I'm pretty happy with the results.

Oh! For some reason it never even occured to me that Power DVD would read DivX files. Hmm. Well, I guess I have lots of ways to capture those movies now. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I myself have never tried capturing from Divx files and never thought to use PowerDVD.  Thanks all. Smiley
