Greece seems to be coming up with a few decent 'boy' movies lately....  this is the fourth one I've seen this year.  'Respiro', 'The Cistern', and 'Backdoor' being the other three.

Hristos is a 12-year-old boy who lives with his mother on a small Greek island. His musician father left him and his mother when Hristos was a baby, to pursue his musical career, and was never seen again. His mother becomes embittered by this and tries to do everything she can to ensure he doesn't become a musician like his absent father. Having showed a rare talent early on for the violin, his is encouraged and fostered by his friend and mentor, the old lighthouse keeper, who teaches him the instrument. Hristos is teased at school because he can't read very well, but it turns out that he suffers from a rare eye disease and is losing his sight. With the arrival of a new teacher on the island, Maria, Hristos's fortunes change as she recognises his talent.

Good movie with some stunning scenery, village locations, inspiring music, and a cool lighthouse.   8/10.

Vladimir Golosinsky* plays 12yo Hristos.

*spelling is from the movie subtitles. IMBD lists his name as Vladimiros Golosinski.
