Zoom Zoom!

Does that refer to a series of car ads of which I can no longer recall the brand?

SAILORMAN is a dramatic 35mm short film written, produced and directed by D.P. Carlson. This father & son story with a maritime theme takes place aboard an old Navy ship on Chicago's industrial lakefront. The film is a unique parable on male sexual abuse as seen through the eyes of an 8-year-old child.

The movie stars Mike Nussbaum (HOUSE OF GAMES & THINGS CHANGE) in the title role of the crusty WWII Navy veteran who stalks the young boy, played by Micah Kanters. Also featured is character actor Ron Dean, Michael Pomeranz, Michael Gorman, Rich Komenich, Jack McCabe and Gary Brichetto.

The director of photography is Greg Gricus, original music by Scott Bennett. Executive Producers are D.P. Carlson, Robert Oschman, Tony Vito, and Don Williams. David Miller Co-Produced. Casting by Jane Alderman. The initial funding for the film was awarded to Carlson through a 1999 Founders Award sponsored by Panavision Chicago, which is given to the Most Promising Midwest Filmmaker.

I wonder what is so unique about it?

SAILORMAN may be available in the near future as part of a short film complilation DVD through my company Film Foetus, Inc.

The film is "unique" because of it's transcendental pace (Bresson, Ozu.)  In other words - it takes it's time, unlike most films nowadays that cut every other second.  I chose the arty approach because it was more lke the tone of my childhood, of which this film is closely based.

The film has a clever and ambiguous ending about child molestation.  The main character (8 yrs) doesn't understand what's right or wrong about a "sailor's handshake" that he's the recipient of.  He only reacts as if it's part of the maritime tradition he is surrounded by during his day on the docks with his dad.

AFTERTHOUGHT: When he gets older, he'll flash-back and remember that some dirty old bastard molested him and make a film about it!  That's what's "unique"...

I guess there is nothing 'unique' about films not getting a release.
