Definitely Simon Birch.  It perfectly portrayed what friendship and tolerance should be as Joseph Mazzello reached out to someone disadvantaged.  The ending also taught an important lesson as (assuming no spoiler since everyone discussing this has seen it) that disadvantaged person everyone rejected risked all to save those who rejected him.

It really makes you think about not judging a book by its cover.

I'm with AH 382. I like both a lot, but if forced to choose, I'd go with Simon Birch.

I prefer "The Mighty".

It is much closer to the book (Freak the Mighty) but "Simon Birch" has gone quite far from its book (A Prayer for Owen Meany -- worth reading).

Interesting movies to compare gee.

The Mighty only grossed $2.6m in the USA.

Simon Birch cost $20m to make and grossed $18.2m in the USA.

The Mighty rates 7.83 on BA and 7.1 on IMDb

while

Simon Birch rates 8.4 on BA and 6.8 on IMDb

Incredibly.. 43 people gave The Mighty a rating of 1/10 on IMBd, and  127 people gave Simon Birch a 1/10..  Are they morons or what   ???

I rated Simon Birch 8/10 and The Mighty 9/10... but that could possibly reverse if I watched them back to back.

This is an interesting comparison. It seems that the majority of people here prefer Simon Birch. But I have to disagree and say I like The Mighty better. The story is more original and has a little more depth. Simon Birch has that whole "everyone can be a hero" bullshit that is present in about 75% of American movies I watch. Not to say that it's a bad movie, but it just strikes me as a lot more conventional and ordinary than The Mighty.

The only thing Simon Birch really has going for it is the wonderful performance (and overall appeal) of Joseph Mazzello.

That depends really on how you look at Amertican films.  Honestly, in most cases "heroism" has become a muddied term - a lot of times the biggest blockbusters/thrillers do a good job of confusing you about who the good/bad guys are or what the end goal is.  Much of the feelgood protagonism is reserved for younger skewing films where a sense of schmaltziness is more acceptable (the ending of Max Keeble's Big Move immediately comes to mind as an example).

Simon Birch took a more realistic approach and delivered this message in practical terms, not by going opverboard with hyperbolae.  It is a lesson that many kds do need today, and that's why I am partial to it.
