Among today's young actors, who would make the best Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn if there was another remake? When I picture Tom, he's  as a bit tough, but innocent. He's about average size for his age. A full head of out of place hair. Rowdy, adventureous, at home outdoors, and likes to get dirty. He enjoys life, but is still very much Aunt Polly's boy. He's really not as tough as he makes out. Basically, a good boy, though prone to make up fibs regularly, and get in trouble.
Huck is the true outdoorsman. He has become very adept at this. He knows what Tom is trying to learn. Tom looks up to him, but he also relishes Tom's friendship, and needs it. He is tough for real, but not mean. He's a bit bigger than Tom. He does not have the security of a home life that Tom does.
Very independent.  He takes on life head on.

In the past movies the casting for their roles was done fairly well, I thought. (although I did think that the one role where Elijah Wood was miscast was Huck Finn. No way I could see him  in that role).
Who among today's young actors would best fit their descriptions? Who could convincingly play the parts? Not many, is my guess. It would be tough.
Perhaps our members have some ideas. They could also include the character who was the direct opposite of Tom and Huck---Sidney.

I have a problem with casting questions like this because my choices have usually made it to their early 20's. Of all the movies about Huck or Tom my favorite is still the 1938 'Adventures of Tom Sawyer', and Tommy Kelly and Jackie Moran seem to best fit the roles per your criteria.

In most cases the casting of these roles over the years appeared to emphasize cuteness rather than boyish ruggedness.

I just thought of who would have made the perfect Huck Finn. He had the rugged look and persona even at a young age, like in "The War".
