Watched this movie again after many years. It's one of those movies that sticks in one's mind forever. Set and filmed in post WWII Berlin amid the ruins, it stars Montgomery Clift and newcomer Ivan Jandl as a war 'orphan' in search of his mother.

Ivan Jandl's performance is one of the best by a child actor, he was awarded a 'juvenile' Oscar for his work.

A sad footnote is that 'Ivan Jandl's performance in the movie gave so much hope to the people of Czechoslovakia that the Russian Govt. took him out of school and put him to work in a rock quarry. He was forced to work there for a long time and never full recovered from the strains put on him at the time. He lived the rest of his life in a sickly state, and died relatively young.'

I saw the film again recently too, on TCM. I was extremely touched by Ivan's performance. Bless him, wherever he may be now.
