Lolita (1962)
Night of the Hunter
The Hustler
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
Cool Hand Luke
Alien 2
The Talented Mr. Ripley
Mystic River
Million Dollar Baby
Blood Simple
Rosemary's Baby
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
From Russia with Love
Marathon Man
Midnight Cowboy
Tootsie
Some Like it Hot
Days of Wine and Roses
Deliverance
Dirty Harry
The Unforgiven
Easy Rider
The Producers (1968)
Raging Bull
Blue Velvet
Schindler's List
Empire of the Sun
Lord of the Flies (1963)

Oh, and Alexander (but just the Connor Paolo part!) Roll Eyes

VERY interesting. I'll be back later with probly a much shorter list. Grin For now, a few impertinent comments:
-I've only been able to watch GWTW to the end once. To me it is the ultimate chick flick.
-Very pleased to see one of my special favorites 'Blade Runner' among the top ten.
-Amazed to see 'Citizen Kane' so far down the list.
-I wish I could buy all rights to 'Chariots of Fire' and bury it deep.

It seems Australians prefer American movies.
LOTR (because it is new?) from NZ
a couple each from a few other countries, incl Australia itself
the rest from USA

American films have always dominated the box office so it's no surprise that they would also dominate a list of favourites. I do, however, think that some films are regarded as American by default, when there is very lttle American input. Dr Zhivago is an example, it has one major American actor, the rest are predominately British or Europeans. It has a British director and British screenwriter, it was shot in Spain but it's listed on IMDb as a US film (presumeably because the money came from there).

I am surprised that the French film Amelie is number two on the list and that Fight Club is anywhere near the top ten. Mildly surprised that Citizen Kane is so far down the list... it seems to have dropped out of favour in recent years. It's interesting how tastes change over the years. The only western in the list is The Good the Bad and the Ugly which is curious because westerns were very popular in years gone by.

Wildeboy...  thanks for your extra titles.

Some like it Hot is on the list at 32.

I also think most people who voted for The Godfather would probably include Godfather 2 as part of that vote... I know I would.

Actually, I didn't mean to include so many titles, but when I got going, I couldn't stop.  I guess that means I like movies!

If you lump Godfather and Godfather 2  together, should also include the last member of the trilogy, #3, and I don't think that one appears on many favorites lists.

I'm driven to mention a few more I forgot, but I'll spare you.

Here is my list of a top 50, as near as I could manage it.
To start off, these are the two movies I have loved that are most calculated to cause others to gasp at my poor taste. Guilty pleasures, I guess.
1. Portrait of Jennie -
Much of the dialogue makes even me wince today, but it combines the supernatural and time travel in a way that is poignant and haunting to me. I would love to see a good re-filming with no cliche’ characters or dialogue and a moody, low-key script. Much the same can be said for my second choice,

2. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir -
Very corny and calculated and hardly a story at all since the ending can be seen a mile away. But there is a wonderful scene of the ghost’s farewell speech, to me one of the finest scenes in the history of old Hollywood.  I love the subtle directorial touches that suggest the presence of the ghost in the scenes after his farewell. Also has a great Bernard Herrmann music score.

Next, here are favorite movies that almost are no longer that because I have seen them so many times I am almost sick of them. Smiley
3.  How Green Was My Valley
4.  Shane
5.  Alien
6.  Psycho

And the rest in a very random order, including ‘boy movies’ I have listed on another thread and those from the ABC top hundred which I agree with. A bit of a mixed bag.  Grin
7.  Great Expectations (1946)
8.  Color of Paradise
9.  Searching For Bobby Fisher
10.  Night of The Hunter (1955)
11.  The Lord of The Flies (1963)
12.  To Kill A Mockingbird
13.  The Innocents
14.  My Father’s Glory
15.  The Sixth Sense
16.  The Cure
17.  A.I. Artificial Intelligence
18.  Mondo
19.  E.T. The Extraterrestrial
20.  Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone
21.  Sling Blade
22.  A Christmas Carol (1951)
23.  Moby Dick (1956)
24.  The Informer (1935)
25.  Dances With Wolves
26.  Snow Falling On Cedars
27.  Dead of Night
28.  Lust For Life
29.  War of The Worlds (1953)
30.  Fahrenheit 451
31.  On The Waterfront
32.  Thief of Baghdad (1940)
33.  The Thing From Another World (1951)
34.  Hamlet (1948 )
35.  The Virgin Spring
36.  The Haunting (1963)
37.  Blade Runner
38.  Pather Panchali
39.  2001: A Space Odyssey
40.  Doctor Strangelove
41.  A Clockwork Orange
42.  The Godfather I, II, III
43.  The Third Man
44.  The Wizard of Oz
45.  Picnic at Hanging Rock
46.  The African Queen
47.  Romeo & Juliet (1968 ) (F. Zeffirelli)
48.  Fargo
49.  Citizen Kane
50.  Stand By Me

I must admit I tend to dislike compiling "charts" because I find trying to compare and "rank" films that I enjoy is usually a fruitless task for me.

But that should be in no way an exhortation to others not to do so; each to their own I say!

My aversion to "lists" does not stop me being critical or appreciative of any particular film that I view; I tend to assess them objectively on their own merits rather than subjectively against others of a similar or contrasting genré.

2 of my favourites that have not been mentioned so far by others are  "Se7en" and "Pitch Black"l I apparently favour the "scary" type!  Shocked

Hello,

I have been enjoying this site for a couple of years as a great resource for my passion for movies, especiially ones with young singers. I've appreciated the reviews and hope to be able to contribute.

Live and let live!

It's taken me a little time to respond to this one, but you all know I can't resist making lists.  Grin

I made up a list of favorites (9's and 10's on my personal scale) that had no boy actors in any prominent roles. 6 were already on the ABC list and Young Arthur mentioned another (The Ghost & Mrs. Muir - I guess we have shared bad taste  Cheesy)

Here are the rest so far unmentioned all in alphabetical order by country.

Little Senegal                      (Algeria)
Man Facing Southeast            (Argentina)
Rabbit Proof Fence            (Australia)
Autumn Spring            (Czech Republic)
Emma's Shadow            (Denmark)
Closet, The            (France)
Tatie Danielle
Under The Sand
Secret of Roan Inish          (Ireland)
Icicle Thief, The                (Italy)
Summer Vacation 1999      (Japan)
Vanishing, The                  (Netherlands)
Jesus of Montreal              (Quebec  Wink)
Philanthropy                     (Romania)
Stairway To Heaven           (UK)
To Sir With Love
About Schmidt                  (USA)
Being There
Birds, The
Blue Collar
Boys Don't Cry
Brubaker
Charlotte's Web
Dawn of the Dead
Dead Zone, The
Devil and Miss Jones
Die Hard
Dracula
Fame
Fisher King, the
Frankenstein
Groundhog Day
I Love You Again
I Married A Witch
It Happened Tomorrow
Memento
Miracle on 34th Street
Planes Trains and Automobiles
Pleasantville
Robocop
Silver Streak
Smoke
Straight Story
Sure Thing
Time of Their Lives, The
Toy Story 2
Trading Places
True Grit
Two Family House
Untouchables, The

I notice that few on my list would be critical classics and that comedies and holiday movies seem to be over represented. Maybe I would respond differently in June.  Smiley

I'm too lazy to make a list, so I'll just post a link to my vote history on IMDb. You need to be a resgistered member to have access to it:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

These are all the movies I've rated so far. There are about 1,500. Just sort them by rating if you want to see my favourites.

That was pretty neat, Joseph!

You must be Ming-liang Tsai's #1 fan.  Smiley

Thanks Joseph. I was pleased to see so many I liked in your 7/10 to 10/10 range. I wish I could return the favor but I have never rated movies at Imdb. I should start.

Zab - you caught me being apologetic about my taste in movies and it was stupid of me. Its just that I am sensitive about those 2 movies, having been sneered at by some family for loving them.

There are many movies on Joseph's, Zab's and Wildeboys lists that I have seen and enjoyed many times. It makes me question the whole notion of 'favorite.' There are hundreds of excellent movies I wouldn't mind seeing again and again.
