It's called The School. It played on the CBC tonight and I wasn't really paying that much attention until I noticed a lot of cute boys in the classroom. Wish I could have captured some images, but I'm not equipped to do that from broadcast TV, unfortunately.

I can't really tell you if the film was any good, but now I'm very curious about it and wish I had caught it from the beginning. It looks interesting and had a nice esthetic to it.

I did see this film 2 years ago when it first made the festival rounds. I don't remember it in great detail. My notes say I gave it 3 stars of 4, so I must've thought it was decent.

I do remember that the story was rather macabre. I recall it as a comedy that not everyone would think was funny.

Apparently it's a 'student' film and also a remake or retelling of a story that's been filmed before. A retelling of what though?

Zab: Yeah, it seemed to have some rather dark humour. Something about dead hamsters, if I understood correctly.

Cal: I saw that  comment on IMDb too. What a frustrating comment! The guy goes on and on about how "well known" and "popular" the short story is, and how unoriginal this version of it is compared to the previous film version, and he gets insulted that the filmmakers didn't credit the original author... and yet he never bothers to credit him (or her) either.

I also noticed he gave it a 1/10, which seems immature and flippant in my opinion. He sounds like a frustrated wannabe filmmaker himself.

Found the answer here: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

(there are also a few images)

"An adaptation of Donald Barthelme’s short story."

His bio on IMDb (with links to other film versions of the short story) :

It was way more than just hamsters.....

I don't recall "Helen" having a significant role in the film.
Maybe that's what its critics are disappointed about?

Wow. Thanks, Zab. That's a very strange story, but I liked it a lot. Very funny.

To those who haven't read it yet, it's only two pages long, so it's worth it.

There are two different short films, both called "The School", both dated 2003, both based on the short story by Donald Barthelme, both Canadian productions.  If you saw one that didn't involve "Helen", maybe you saw the other one...

this  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); 8 minutes, recently shown on the Sundance Channel

this  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); 12 minutes, I haven't seen.

I saw the one that did not play on Sundance. I'll have to check the listings to watch the other.

The 'non-sundance' short is quite good.
