Dirk & Jon hit it off in Hunted

Dirk Bogarde was a man of many talents. I admired him greatly when I was kid and watched every single movie he was in that I could. In 1952 he teamed up with one of the best child actors of all time... Jon Whitely, one of the very few kids to receive an 'Oscar' (Special Honorary Award for "The Kidnappers" in 1953) to make "Hunted", one of those B&W Rank Organization releases that were so prolific at the time.

"Hunted" is a little gem of a movie well worth checking out if it crops up on late night TV. Bogarde is a fugitive and circumstances cause him to encounter a young boy who has run away from an abusive foster home.

The power of this movie is the way Bogarde's character reluctantly becomes protective of the kid despite the great risk to his own freedom.

Five years later Dirk Bogarde and Jon Whitely teamed up again in the movie "The Spanish Gardner" which although a little melodramatic was well worth watching.

'Hunted' looks like one gem of a movie. I must have seen it in the years since its release but I can't recall.  In any case I'll be looking for it!

I tried a search at Netflix and they listed some 130 titles, including titles with 'hunter' and 'haunt.'
Zab, do you know how to narrow the search down to the one word title you want? Anyone?

Hi, everyone. This is David in England and this is my first post on this forum. I thought I'd better register when I logged on to find the latest discussion about one of my favourite films, HUNTED starring Dirk Bogarde and Jon Whiteley, which was filmed in late 1951 and released in early 1952. The title in the US was changed to The Stranger in Between.

Although HUNTED is not available on VHS or DVD in the UK, or in the US, as far as I know, it is, for some reason, available on continental Europe and there's a seller on eBay UK who imports DVD copies of it from Holland. There's one up for auction at the moment (Saturday, January 14th, 2006). You won't regret buying it, either. The film's an absolute gemm! Here is the eBay link for anyone interested.

Yeh, I know the price is a bit steep for a DVD, but he seems to know when he's on to a good thing and there's always at least one bidder everytime he puts one of these things up. I've been watching this seller and he's sold quite a few copies of Hunted in the past year or so. Why this film isn't available in the UK is anybody's guess. It was issued by Carlton on VHS in 1995, complete with the original trailer on the beginning and a poster on the back of the insert card. But this video was deleted a few years back. A UK or US DVD release is long overdue.

You can get it for a good deal cheaper than that from Amazon Germany:

Yes, you're right there, Quantum. But as I only speak English, I find it hard to understand the foreign amazon sites. Although I did manage once to buy a DVD of Jon Whiteley's Moonfleet off amazon France (not available anywhere else). But it took some doing. I had to translate each page, a few words at a time, using an Internet translator and hope for the best. That was over a year ago and I'm still getting emails from amazon France and I can't understand a word of them. It's far easier for me to order off amazon US and amazon UK. But thanks for the link. I shall study it and see what can be done.

The advantage of the German and French Amazon sites is that the layout is identical to the English versions, and the accounts are linked - so you can pretty much manage without knowing any German or French (I usually don't pay much attention to what the page actually says, but just click on the buttons...)
