Children of Leningradsky (2004)

A documentary short that was shown on SBS tv, following Born into Brothels.

Children of Leningradsky is one of the saddest films I've ever seen. I doubt if anyone could watch it and not shed some tears. In some ways this film could be considered off topic because it does not containing any professional acting, however it is a film not to be missed. A reality check on how lucky most of us are with the relatively comfortable lives we lead.

A review from IMDb:

Author: brundlefly-2000 (pablomontoya@auna.com) from Madrid, Spain

This is a warning: Approach this documentary with great care. Depicting the daily miseries of orphans of Moscow who lead lives that we could not imagine even in our worst nightmares, it is horror in its purest state, so heart-wrenching that you will have to make an effort to be able to watch it from start to finish without having to look away. Images that will probably haunt you for a long time, if not forever. God, I can feel my eyes welling up just remembering them... It is unbelievable that these horrors, which seem to be a tale from centuries ago, are allowed to take place every day, not just in this wretched 21st century world, but so close to us rich westerners, in a European city which has never been considered to be in "the third world".

Near the end, one of the characters says something like "God loves everybody, not just the Russians; he even loves the Chechens; but, most of all, he loves the children". It sounds to me like the best advice Mr. Putin could ever receive. And these words of wisdom don't come from a cultivated analyst, they come from an abandoned child who dwells in the streets of the same city he lives in...

Jeez. Looks like a very disturbing film. I have a pretty high tolerance for disturbing material, but I think I might stay away from this one. Too depressing.

Thanks for the review/caps, though.

Terrific presentation, Cal of a disturbing film. I'm inclined to agree with Joseph, but I think I'll give it a shot anyway.
In fact, I'm pretty sure I checked out this movie before, but declined adding it to my list. But now I feel it is one I ought to see.

Children of Leningrad hasn't been released on DVD yet, YA.

Perhaps you are thinking of Children Underground?

Wow, some shocking caps there. Thanks for posting, It's so sad these poor kids have to go through this  Sad I wish I could take them all in and look after them. No child deserves to live like that.
I love documentaries and I would like to see this one. I hope the BBC will show it here in the UK.

Yes I have. Children Underground is very similiar but it had a more positive ending. This film leaves the viewer feeling angry and very sad.
