just watched "the neverending story 2". loved it,
and then i googled him and was shocked to find out what happened - he hung himself.

did they ever get to the bottom of what exactly was the cause?

Suicide. If I recall correctly his career was on a slide and he was suffering from depression. Whatever the cause it was certainly very sad and quite a shock to many people.
