a reviewer on tv last night said the 12-year-old boy is "over-sexualised" during a m*sturbation scene!

[or did my ears deceive me?]

the programme in which the movie is reviewed can be seen online for one week.

I don't understand.

Are you asking whether there is such a scene in the movie...

Or are you tacitly disagreeing with the comment that the boy was over-sexualised?

I'm curious as to how a person can actually be over-sexualised during a masturbation scene. Maybe the reviewer has spent a lot of time observing such scenes so considers himself an authority on the subject.

Yeah, no kidding. How exactly would you have a non-sexualized masturbation scene?

Maybe having such a scene will (all by itself) over-sexualise the character...???

Good point. Maybe the problem is... there are relatively few masturbation scenes involving boys that age in American movies... considering that most boys that age do masturbate.

The obvious solution to reduce the over-sexualization of a character that masturbates is to ensure that such scenes are far more common.

I also noticed that Owen was Kevin Kline's son.  This probably helped him perform the "over-sexualised" scenes which apple notes above.  I'm probably a little old-fashioned but I also (like the TV reviewers above) found these scenes with Owen unnecessary and they made me feel very uncomfortable.  But I also recognise that the film looked at the lives of the family members uncompromisingly, each member appearing under the writer's micro-scope in as honest a way he could find, so what was uncomfortable to me (and most of the audience, I would imagine) was also hard-going for the family. A real pearl of a film, though and very pleasing to see it get lots of attention.  Jesse Eisenberg also deserves a lot of praise, the older brother seen from the point of view of his lil brother.  Funny how perfect an 80 minute film can be, the equivalent of a literary novella.
