There's more to Cannes than the official competition. Have they announced the films in the other categories already?

I would love to go to Cannes one day. But we get some OK festivals here in Montreal. The funny thing is there are at least 5 fairly large film festivals each year - and that's not even counting the small ones that museums organize or the retrospectives showing at the Cinematheque year-long.

My favourite one is in October (Festival du Nouveau Cinéma), and it's almost like an anthology of all the interesting films that have played in other festivals all year (plus some premieres, but usually not very many).

But the one with most movies that feature boys is usually the Festival des films du monde, which happens in September. The quality of the films there is generally much lower, but you also get to see some films that will never play in North America ever again (usually because they suck and can't get distribution, but sometimes you find some real gems).

Then there's Fantasia in August, which focuses on genre cinema (sci-fi, horror, gore, action) and weird Asian cinema. (They also have some European and North American films, though.)

The other two big film festivals are less interesting to me. One is a new commercial thing that was a pathetic failure last year. The other is much more successful and has a long tradition, but I've never been to it and there aren't usually a lot of things I am interested in.

In terms of smaller festivals, there's a children's film festival, a documentary festival, and like I said several mini festivals organized by the fine arts museums.

But Ron Howard's The DaVinci Code opening the festival? Jesus Christ!

Cannes certainly isn't what it used to be.

Cheer up Nicolas, Cannes still has at least two more sections of films to announce, some of which may be of interest.

I just finished attending the last few film festivals of the season for me. I'm done now until Montreal. There have been a number of new films of interest which have been introuduced in the various festivals.
When I have more time, I'll post about them.
