Apparently the box of toys is from the future.

No major stars in this movie so I immediately thought it must be a low budget kids flick... straight to video...  but it seems to be something more. There is already a fair amount of discussion about it on IMDb.

Financed by New Line and directed by the co-CEO of the company (!?) so I'd say, yeah, probably not low-budget.

"Rainn Wilson (The Office) will star in Mimzy for New Line Cinema. Bob Shaye, the co-CEO of New Line, is directing the film for the studio. The story follows two siblings who find a box of toys sent from the future and suddenly start to develop some wonderful (and terrifying) talents. When their parents and a teacher notice the kids' new behavior, they're all drawn into a new and unique world. Wilson will play a science teacher, while Joely Richardson will play the siblings' mother."
