It's not scheduled for theatrical release in the states until mid-summer. It did seem to get good reviews from those who saw it at the Sundance festival.

Good caps, Dakkar.

Boys and rivers go so well together, and this of course looks interesting.

It's got a very high Rating on IMDb so far 8.8/10.

It's definitely the sort of Rambo(w) I prefer.  Smiley

Mark Peranson, in an article for Cinema Scope Magazine about the Sundance and Berlin Festivals, wrote:

"The most egregious of the recent crop of Sundance Rushmore clones, Jeffrey Blitz's Rocket Science, is watchable and amusing, but one would expect nothing less from a dramedy set in the cutthroat world of high-school debating. But even on paper its premise - that a preternaturally shy protagonist burdened by a hefty speech impediment would become a debater out of a misguided attraction to a conniving bitch - is simply ludicrous, and the paint-by-Anderson screenplay doesn't help. More poignant - perhaps simply because of the added points for being British and focusing on younger kids, who are by nature cuter - Hammer and Tong's Son of Rambow mined the same vein and hit a rich ore of filmic references, adolescent friendship, and, in a tolerable fashion, French-baiting."

Not exactly what I would call a positive review, but he's a hard critic to please (which is why I like him). The highlighted bit made me smile, though. Cheesy

I found a review in the April issue of Empire...this is what they say:

There was no Little Miss Sunshine-sized buzz this year, but despite a healthy market, generating some $40 million in sales, the biggest surprise was that the most loved was saved for a resolutely British flick about two '80s kids who watch quiz show Screen Test, make bootelg videos at the cinema and dream of the New Romantic secrets - Space Dust, Coke, smelly erasers - of their sixth form common room. Solf for US$8 million to Paramount, Son of Rambow was a labour of love for UK's Hammer & Tongs outfit. Written and directed by Garth Jennings and produced by Nick Goldsmith, it was intended as the team's feature debut, until a $60 million script called Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy came their way. Returning to the project with a fraction of that budget, they set about telling the story of a scrawny kid who teams up with the school tearaway to make a video version of First Blood. "It was always important that it was Rambo", explains Jennings. "The original story came out of some notes I'd made, based on my own experiences as an 11-year old. Using my father's video camera we used to make little home movies, then my friends and I saw a pirate copy of First Blood, and it blew our minds. So we made our own little Rambo sequel. That was our starting point but we couldn't find a better substitute for, or fake version of, Rambo. First Blood really has something about it, and we had to stick with that." One studio exec has described the film as "Billy Elliot directed by Tim Burton", but Jennings thinks that's overstating it. "A friend of mine had a great one" he says. "It's Stand By Me meets Living In Oblivion."

Thanks dakkar.  It looks like a movie that is promising enough to seek out when it becomes available.

The problem with reading such positive comments is that one's expectation is now probably higher than the movie will deliver.

Probably so, Cal..... but with positive reviews from many sources, it cannot possibly be a bad film.

One  good example of a low-budget film that didn't seem to receive much in the way of negative responses was titled "Millions".

It's near the top of the list to see or buy, but just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

And now, "Son of Rambow" seems to be going in the same direction.

Funny. Everyone seems to have skipped right over the comment I posted. It was a somewhat negative review. (Although the writer is comparing it favourably to another film.)

I don't think my expectations are that high. I'll probably like it more than the review I posted and less than the review Dakkar posted.

Millions was pretty good.

Good to point that review out, Joseph.  But as you said, because it was being compared favorably to another flic, it was difficult to see the review as being negative at all in regard to "Son Of Rambow".

As for "Millions", the biggest hinderance in purchasing this dvd is the fact that the movie was so well supported by television preachers and clergy.

The captivating plot / story is what seems most intriguing.

This movie is on my playlist today... finally!  Member reviews must surely outweigh the reviews of so-called "professionals" !!

Oh, and I simply LOVED "Millions" too!

Huh, I'd forgotten all about that Mark Peranson quote I posted almost two years ago. It's hard to tell from one line what he really thought of the movie. (Most of the paragraph is about the other movie, Rocket Science.)

I guess I wasn't all that enthusiastic about the film back then, but as the release date approached and I found out more about it, my enthusiasm did grow, and when I finally saw it, I loved it. In fact, I'd say it's probably in my top 5 favourite boy movies of the past few years.

I saw it twice already (once in the theatre and once on DVD).
