from what I could understand, he had lost everything (his profession as an astronaut, for example, and his family), and at the school, when he tried to help the kids, he was reprimanded (got in trouble himself) and was threatened to leave the kids alone.  He couldn't handle knowing that he COULD help, but was helpless to do so!  He was going to fail again, and lose the only other thing he had grown attached to... the boy.  But maybe I read too much into it?

He found events in his life had led him into a state of depression and he saw no optimism or hope for the future. He was living in a world which was full of despair and he wasn't allowed to be friends with the boys. I can really relate to that.

I just saw a video clip of this movie on YouTube... a clip that was DEFINITELY NOT in the version of the movie I saw!  Darn American versions!

The clip (as long as it lasts) is here:

Don't know which American version you saw, but there didn't look to be anything in that clip that isn't in the US DVD that I have...

I must have had the sensitive southern Baptist / Mormon / Quaker version.  Just my luck.
