The lovelorn soldier Lt. John Boles takes refuge in the hut of a peasant family.  He shows them how to revive their 10-year-old son Geza using horse brushes on his bare skin.

Later, Geza misbehaves and has to be disciplined.  His mother fastens Geza's wrists in the buckles on the wall, tears off his shirt, and takes a horsewhip to him.

"Mother, please continue!"

Geza's father faces away and stares at the wall.  Boles thinks it is a man's place to discipline a wayward child, not a woman's.  So when Geza's father does nothing, Boles takes over the whipping of the boy. Afterward, Geza thinks his father is a coward, but Boles is great!

Geza's mother thinks so, too!

Boles, missing his dead sweetheart Iris, is lying naked in bed when Geza brings him a drink.  Boles smells Geza's clothes:   "Geza! You smell like Iris!"

... ...

Geza strips naked and gets in his own bed nearby.

(It's just a one-room hut, so everything is "nearby".)

In the night, Geza has a nightmare: spiders crawlng all over his skin.

So to comfort the kid, Boles brushes off Geza's naked body with his hands.  Frightened Geza begs to get into bed with Boles.

Both naked under a blanket.  Spoons.

Geza's grandma is pleased with this.

According to the DVD commentary, "Archangel" for a time was Maddin's most popular movie---being invited to gay and lesbian film festivals, because of this scene.

One morning, Boles and his girl come to bid farewell to Geza, since they are going to re-join the fighting.  Geza is still naked in bed!

I wonder ...

In a later scene, the nasty Bolsheviks come to the hut in the night, kill Geza's father, and snatch Geza out of bed.  But (unfortunately) Geza is wearing long black pajama bottoms.

So ... Does Geza only sleep naked when there is an interesting man in the hut?  I wonder...

I've given the movie's profile page a bit of a 'spit and polish'.

IMDb seems to have misspelt David Falkenberg's name (as 'Falkenburg', with a 'u') - the screencap showing his credit (top of this thread) clearly shows that his surname is in fact spelt with an 'e'.
