Movies ranked 10/10

While personally reviewing and rating films for our database, only 56 movies, out of 715 films reviewed..... have gotten the 10/10 ranking, (less than 8%).   Naturally, some of the films rated a 10 were due either to a great story, or possibly great acting, and occasionally just because the movie was appealing for personal reasons.    Only nine of the 715 films are ranked 1/10.

Am wondering if others find it as rare to rank a film with the best, at 10/10.

It appears that the highest rated movie overall in our database is "MOV OG FUNDER", quite an achievement for a film that is barely an hour long.  What a great production that film was.

I looked at my personal list of all movies seen and the answer is yes from me even though it also appears I grade on a curve.  Smiley

3981 movies seen rated on a four star scale converted to 10 point system.

10-138  ****
9-448    *** 1/2
8-909    ***
6-1198  ** 1/2
5-654    **
4-367    *1/2
3-183    *
1-84      BOMB

My BA ratings are done on a 10 point system and vary slightly from this accounting.

I would have many more 10's I'm sure if I watched more films from the past. I have 56 of them since 2000, but only 3 from the 1960's. I'm sure there's a lot of good stuff out there I just haven't seen yet.

Hey Zab..... after reading your post, the idea came to see if we can see what other people have rated films just from our B-A database.  In our data-base alone, you have rated 1333 films (nearly twice as many).

You've rated 66 movies a perfect 10/10, (just under 5%), but you are a bit more kind-hearted when it comes to giving a movie just a rating of a 1/10..... as you've only done that for 14 films.

When you mentioned having ranked 3981 films (nearly 4000!), it makes us realize just how many boy-related films are not in our database.   It's impossible to list many of them, simply because the information, photos, etc are scarce.... even on the web.

Like you, there are a lot more films that have been viewed than have been rated in the B-A database, probably closer to 2000 or 2500 movies.    (But no where near the 4000 or so you've been able to see!)

Interesting idea for members to rank their favourite movies and quite a difficult thing to do I would think. Giving a 10 for a film means it has to be nigh perfect. I can't think of many of those. Plenty in the 7 and 8 rankings but not many 10s.
If I dare to award a 10 to a film it would be 'Motorama' which featured Jordan Christopher Michael's outstanding performance as 10 year old Gus on his adventures driving a car across a mythical USA collecting tickets at gas stations to make up the word Motorama.
Another would be 'The Cure' with the late Brad Renfro and Joseph Mazzello. Beautiful story of boyhood friendship.
There might be a few more but I'd need time to think.  Smiley

I used to spend a lot of time on IMDb message boards and one of the arguments that some of the members there used was that no movie should ever be rated 10/10, because that would mean it's perfect, and no movie will ever be perfect. Which I thought was the dumbest argument ever. What's the point of having a scale of 1 to 10 if you're not allowed to use the whole thing?

People there took movie rating way too seriously. A lot of people also went on and on about how their ratings were "objective," which again I think is BS. Movies can't be rated objectively. I may have pretty strong opinions about which movies I think are good or bad, but I would never be pretentious enough to claim that my ratings are objective. They're completely subjective.

I try to spread my ratings somewhat evenly across the whole span of the scale, with a bit of a curve in the middle, so that there are more movies rated 4, 5, 6 or 7, and fewer 8, 9 or 10. As for the bottom of the scale, I used to be a little weary of awarding a movie a rating of 1/10, because I thought that should be reserved for only exceptionally bad films. But these days I'm really tired of all the crap I see on TV and movie screens and my tolerence for it has gone down a lot. When something is bad enough to offend me or annoy me, I don't hesitate to give it a 1, a 2, or a 3 if I'm feeling really generous.

My ratings on this site (and on IMDb) are dated. My tastes and opinions have changed somewhat since I started using these rating systems, so if I were to review all my ratings, I'd probably make a lot of changes. I don't think I really care enough to bother, though. For some reason, I'm not as obsessive about that sort of thing as I used to be.

In my opinion, I would rate the original 1963 "Lord of the Flies" as a 10, for it's overall effect. Having read the novel before seeing the film, I was impressed at how faithful it was to the book and I felt the acting was naturalistic, which is what it needed to be for that story. My opinion: an excellent movie!
