Has "The Squid and the Whale" ever been discussed?

On this forum, I mean.
I did a quick search for the name and no matches were found. Does anyone know of a thread about this movie here? If there isn't one, maybe this could be the start of one.  Smiley

I've watched it twice and Owen Klien is wonderful. He's a very good actor and very appealing, in my opinion. I'd like to see a discussion of this movie.

The search function doesn't seem to be all that helpful these days.

Not much discussion, though. To be honest, I don't remember this movie all that well. But I remember liking it.

Saw it about a year or so ago. I liked it, particularly Owen Kline.

The ending was a bit shithouse, I overrated the film and gave it an overall  8/10.

Breaking it down:

Movie itself 7/10
Owen Kline's performance 8/10
Owen Kline's X factor 10/10

Re-watchability:
Movie itself 6/10
Owen Kline's scenes 10/10

Overrated. Owen Kline was okay, I suppose. Being Kevin Kline's son helps. In 2005 some people were saying it was the best film of the decade but all I saw was just another film about kids and divorce. Not unwatchable, just overrated.

I wonder why Owen Klein never did another movie? I thought he was a very good actor. Completely believable. In a couple years or less he won't be a boy anymore. What a shame to not have more movies with him. To my way of thinking, he has it all: intelligence, sensitivity, talent, charismatic personality, cute good looks and a certain sexiness.

Maybe in order to have a childhood?

An interesting comment on this from Ron Howard is in a recent TIME magazine.

I do remember liking the movie (which explains the 9 I gave it, I guess) and not liking the ending much at all.  But that "x-factor" had a lot to do with it.

I also remember hearing something about why Owen never did another film, despite liking his time on this movie, and it did have something to do with keeping his childhood and his father not wanting him to be a child actor.  I can understand that.

I can certainly understand that also. Being a child actor is very stressful for the child. Some cope with it well, many don't. I would hate for Owen to have had his emotional health damaged by the high pressure demands of being a child actor, especially if he had become well known. (I don't think a lot of people have seen The Squid and the Whale, or even heard of it.) Owen's well being is more important to me than getting to see him in movies. I wish him the best in life.
