My choice for 1998 would have to be Vinicius de Oliveira in Central do Brasil

My previous additions went back to 1964, so here's from 1963 back to 1950:

1963
Best performance: Fergus McCelland  in "A boy ten feet tall" (aka Sammy going south)
runner up: Ronny Howard in "The courtship of Eddies Father"
However, my favourite was: James Aubrey in "Lord of the flies"
along with many of the supporting actors so I'm in agreement with Josephk
in selecting the entire ensemble of the film.
Second favourite was Luke Halpin in "Flipper"
I also liked Vangelis Joannides in "Young Aphrodites" and Petit Gibus (Martin Lartigue) in "Bébert"

1962
Best performance: Kolya Burlyayev in "Ivanovo detstvo"
My favourite though was easily Paolo Colombo  in "Agostino"
others:
Sean Scully in "Almost angels"
Phillip Alford and  John Megna in "To kill a mockingbird"
Oliver Grimm in "Reach for glory"
Honorary mention to Mary Badham in 'To kill a mockingbird'

1961 (easy choice)
Martin Stephens in  "The Innocents"
runner up: Reitze van der Linden in "The knife" (Het mes)
others:
Roger Mobley  in "The boy who caught a crook"
David Ladd in "Misty"
Petit Gibus and the entire kid ensemble in "War of the buttons"
Honorary mention to Haley Mills in "Whistle down the wind"

1960
David Ladd in "Raymie" and  "Dog of Flanders"
Eddie Hodges in "The adventures of Huckleberry Finn"
Kevin Corcoran in  "Pollyanna" and "Toby Tyler"
Martin Stephens in "Village of the damned"
Honorary mention to Haley Mills in "Pollyanna"

1959
Jean-Pierre Leaud in "400 coups"
runners up:
Eddie Hodges in "A hole in the head"
Kevin Corcoran  in "The shaggy dog"
Roger Mobley  in  "A dog's best friend"
Honorary mention to Haley Mills in "Tiger Bay"

1958
Jan Handzlik  in "Auntie Mame"
runners up:
Richard Williams in "Heart of a child"
David Ladd in "The proud rebel"
Charles Herbert and Paul Peterson in "Houseboat"
Keith Calvert in "Smiley gets a gun"
Felipe Pazos in "The old man and the sea"

1957
Kevin Corcoran in in "Old Yeller"
runners up:
Tommy Kirk  in "Old Yeller"

runners up:

runners up:
Subir Banerji in "Pather Panchali"
Jonathan Ashmore in "A kid for two farthings"
Tim Hovey in "The private war of Major Benson"
Andres Velasquez in "The littlest outlaw"

1954
Tommy Rettig  was pretty good in "River of no return"
runners up:
Ensemble of Tim Considine, David Stollery, Rex Thompson  in "Her twelve men"

A much better year...
Jon Whiteley in "The kidnappers"
runners up:

Jon Whiteley in "Hunted"
also:
Pascal Lamorisse in "Crin-blanc"

I think I left off at 1955....

1955  Billy Chapin in Night of the Hunter
1954  Tommy Rettig in River of No Return
1953  Richie Andrusco in The Little Fugitive
1952  Jon Whiteley for Hunted
1951  Billy Gray for On Moonlight Bay
1950  John Howard Davies in The Rocking Horse Winner over Wiilliam Fox in The Magnet

Heading into the 1940's now with

1949  Bobby Driscoll in The Window with a supporting nod to Gordon Gebert in A Holiday Affair.

I'll leave 1948 for the next contributor.... I have 5 nominees to pick from!

I can't really keep up with you guys. Throughout the 50s and 40s, I've rarely seen more than one film per year featuring a boy in a major part.

Excellent choice K!

I think all four of my remaining choices are worth mentioning as well. Dean Stockwell in The Boy with Green Hair, Gary Gray in Rachel and the Stranger, Ivan Jandl in The Search and Ted Donaldson in The Decision of Christopher Blake.

My 1947 choice is Laci Horváth for Valahol Európában aka Somewhere in Europe.

1946 should be a fairly easy choice for the next contributor....

I agree with everybody!  Cool

1946  Anthony Wager in Great Expectations.

Okay Zab, I might have said Bobby Driscoll in Song of The South if I had seen the movie in the last 50 years.

Also,
1945 Billy Severn in The Enchanted Forest

You read my mind YA....
Bobby Driscoll for 1946 with Claude Jarman Jr running second.

In 1945 (not a lot for me to choose from) I went with Jackie "Butch" Jenkins in Our Vines Have Tender Grapes

This takes me to 1944 where I would select Skip Homeier in Tomorrow the World over Luciano De Ambrosis in The Children are Watching Us.

1943 is another slow floater down the middle of the plate as the next hitter approaches....... (how many days 'til spring training?)

Ok, well here's my choices for the forties:

1949:
Bobby Driscoll in "The window"
others:
Dean Stockwell in "The secret garden" and "Down to the sea in ships"
Peter Miles in "The red pony"
Gordon Gebert in "Holiday affair"

1948 : (strong year)
Ivan Jandl in "The Search"
runners up:
Enzo Staiola in "The bicycle thief"
John Howard Davies in "Oliver Twist"
others:
Bobby Henrey in "The fallen idol"
Bobby Driscoll in "So dear to my heart"
Dean Stockwell in "The boy with green hair"

1947:
Edmund Meschke in "Germany year zero"
others:
Butch Jenkins in "My brother talks to horses"
Dean Stockwell in "The mighty McGurk", "Gentleman's Agreement", "Song of the Thin Man"
Honorary mention to Natalie Wood in "Miracle on 34th Street"

1946:
Claude Jarman Jr in "The yearling"
others:
Rinaldo Smordoni  in "Shoeshine"
Anthony Wager in "Great Expectations"
Bobby Driscoll in "Song of the South"
Dean Stockwell in "The green years"

1945: (really weak year)
Butch Jenkins in "Our vines have tender grapes"
runner up:
Dean Stockwell in "Anchors aweigh"

1944:
Even though I haven't seen either of these films for decades, I'd chose:
Skip Homeier in  "Tomorrow the world"
runner up:
Luciano DeAmbrosis in "The children are watching us"

1943 (weak year)
Roddy McDowall  in "Lassie come home"

1942 (another weak year)
No best performance but my favourite was easily:
Darryl Hickman in "Keeper of the flame"
others:
Scotty Beckett in "Kings Row"
Roddy McDowall in "The pied piper"
All three were supporting roles.

1941:
Roddy McDowell in "How green was my valley"
runners up:
the ensemble cast of Darryl Hickman (10), Larry Nunn (13), Bobs Watson (10), Bobby Winkler (14) Harry McKim (11) in "Men of Boys Town"

1940: (a weak year)
The beat I can come up with:
Billy Lee in  "The biscuit eater"

I've found this to be a most interesting topic. It's been great to look through all the myriad choices for favourite or best boy actors over the years. It also shows that there is a vast knowledge and vast collections of films out there from what I've read.
I even found a reference to 'The Brothers Lionheart' which I saw on the TV years ago and liked especially Lars Soderdahl playing the younger brother and, of course, the memorable theme music. I knew that Claude Jarman Jr would have to be mentioned for 1946 as his performance in 'The Yearling' was outstanding and for which he received a special child Oscar.
However, I've also noticed that the boy actors referred to only go back to 1940 and that no further posts have been added since January of this year! So, being an Oldie, I can certainly recommend the following:-
1939 Tommy Kelly in 'Tom Sawyer'.
1937 Freddie Bartholomew in 'Captains Courageous' and Billy and Bobby Mauch in 'The Prince and the Pauper'.

As the films get older and older it gets tougher, Cinefan. Since we are only discussing performances we have actually seen, the pool of available performances to choose from can be very small.

With that said, here are the rest of my nominees going back as far as I can go.

1943  Roddy McDowall for Lassie Comes Home

1942  Darryl Hickman primarily for Jackass Mail; but he was good in smaller roles in Keeper of the Flame and Joe Smith American as well.

1941  Roddy McDowall again for How Green Was My Valley with a mention to Douglas Croft in Remember the Day

1940  Billy Lee in The Biscuit Eater with consideration for Billy Dawson in Father is a Prince

1939  Sonny Bupp in No Place to Go over Raymond Severn in We are Not Alone

1938  I agree with Tommy Kelly for Tom Sawyer over Freddie Bartholomew in Lord Jeff.

1937  Freddie Bartholomew is my choice here for Captains Courageous over Eldon Grant in Big Fella and Bobby Breen in Make a Wish.

1936  Freddie Bartholomew in Little Lord Fauntleroy

1935  Jackie Cooper in O'Shaughnessy's Boy over George Breakston in The Return of Peter Grimm

1934  George Breakston in No Greater Glory and Johnny Singer in Something Always Happens  (I can't decide who was better here).

1933  Jackie Cooper is the best of a bad lot for Lone Cowboy

1932  Raymond Borzage in Young America

1931  A very good year. Jackie Cooper wins for me in Skippy with mentions to Robert Coogan also for Skippy and Leon Janney in The Adventures of Penrod and Sam.

1930  The last year for which I can offer an opinion. I choose Jackie Searl in Tom Sawyer. Jackie was born to play Sid Sawyer!

I have seen too few films in the 1910's and 1920's to offer a year by year anlaysis but will instead nominate Jackie Coogan for 1921's The Kid as the best silent film boy actor performance I have seen to date.

Wow! You are certainly going back now, 'Zlabadowski'. In fact, when it gets back to the early thirties you really have only the odd film to choose from never mind a list of boy actors like you have nowadays.
Thinking of the 30s, another film I have the DVD of and to which you referred is the old favourite 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' with, of course, the great Master Bartholomew.
I see you refer to Bobby Breen. It is so refreshing to find someone who even knows of these boy actors from so long ago. I have him starring in 'Fisherman's Wharf' where he sings 'Ave Maria' and also 'Way Down South'. The problem with Master Breen is he's a very nice singer but didn't sing often enough in his films which don't seem to have been remastered very well if at all. They are real period efforts! You mention a Sonny Bupp. Is that any relation to Tommy Bupp who starred with Breen in 'Fisherman's Wharf'?

I"m not trying to steal Zabladowski's thunder, but Tommy and Sonny Bupp were brothers.

Little Lord Fauntleroy is one of my favorite stories. I have seen most filmed versions of it. The Freddie Bartholomew version is my favorite movie, but Aleksei Veselkin is my favorite Ceddie.

As for Bobby Breen he is another of my favorites from this era. The first few movies he made were his best I thought. Let's Sing Again, Rainbow on the River (aka It Happened in New Orleans) and Make A Wish, which was actually nominated for an Oscar for its music - My Campfire Dreams from that film is one of my favorite movie songs of all time. After that his film career bore a similarity to Elvis Presley's. Most of the films were set in exotic locations and were poorly plotted excuses to get little Bobby singing.
The problem with the current condition of those films is that they are all public domain titles (i.e. no one holds a copyright on them). It is doubtful that anyone will embark on a restoration campaign so we are stuck with what we have unfortunately.

To build on what K had to say, Sonny was the youngest of the Bupp family. In addition to Tommy, he had two sisters, June and Ann, who also appeared in films, though in bit parts.
