1983

Gábor Fehér

I might have listed "A Christmas Story" with Peter Billingsley as runner-up, since our database has it dated 1983, but Cal already mentioned it for 1984.

Cal, it's true that Christian Bale's performance was great in Empire of the Sun. There were a lot of really good performances that year. Gaspard Manesse is still my favourite, though.

For 1986 I would've picked River Phoenix in Stand by Me.

For 1985, I'd have to go with My Life as a Dog, as I've already mentioned it's one of my all-time favourites, although Young Arthur's pick of Lukas Haas in Witness would be my second choice.

For 1984, I share Cal's favourite, Barrett Oliver in Neverending Story (although I'm surprised he didn't pick Noah Hatheway, which seems to be a more popular choice).

I haven't seen Hosenhaus' pick for 1983. I think I would have to go with Jeremy Licht for his role in the last segment of the Twilight Zone movie. Definitely a favourite, even if it's just a short segment.

And now:

1982. I'll have to go with Henry Thomas in ET.

Thanks all for trying to explain the distinction between favorite and best. I still think the best performances would always be among my favorites and my favorite performances would be among my best for that's what makes them so. While I will concede that sometimes performers are held back by the limitations of their productions,a really good performance can help elevate the whole movie. The best example I can think of off the top pf my head is Miko Hughes in Mercury Rising; not really a good film, but Miko shines in it.

Back to the countdown....

In 1985 (a lean year for me) I join Young Arthur with Lukas Haas over Barret Oliver. Special mention to Sean Roberge in the short film Going to War.

1984 I also selected Jason Presson over Xavier Norman Petermann (Mario) and Barret Oliver.

1983 (another weak year for me) I couldn't find anything better I'd seen than Jeremy Licht. I would select him over Sebastian Dungan and Gábor Fehér.

1982 I second Henry Thomas (probably going to be a consensus pick for that year) over John Albasiny (Kipperbang), Griffin O'Neal (The Escape Artist) and Brian Svrusis (Any Friend of Nicholas Nickleby). Special supporting role mention to the charmingly profane Robby Still in Six Pack.

Which bring us to 1981: My selection is Fernando Ramos Da Silva in Pixote over Alex Svanbjerg (Rubber Tarzan). Best supporting performance to Brendan Ward in Taps.

I haven't seen most of your standout 1980 performances  Embarrassed

so I choose Chris Makepeace in My Bodyguard. My review of 1980 movies doesn't show a lot of competition in lead roles, though I loved Rossie Harris in Airplane and Paul Quandt in My Bodyguard for supporting roles.

1979  I'd select Michael Eric Kramer in Over the Edge over Jeremy Levy in Rich Kids and Stephen Austin in A Special Gift.

I was hoping someone else would take 1978, since I can only think of one film featuring a boy in a major role that I've seen, and it's Damien: Omen II.

So I guess my favourite actor for that year is Jonathan Scott-Taylor.

We're now entering the period where I've only seen a few films featuring boys each year, so it's going to be harder for me to participate. But I hope we can keep this going at least through the 70s and 60s.

Traditional wisdom for 1979 would be David Bennent

I'm not very traditional Hosenhaus... Tongue
I also haven't seen The Tin Drum yet. It's one of many on "the list."

Don't feel too bad about 1978 joseph, Jonathan Scott-Taylor was on my short list though I selected Larry B Scott in A Hero Ain't Nothing but a Sandwich as my winner for that year. My other performances under consideration were tv movies Ronnie Scribner for A Home Run for Love and When Every Day was the 4th of July and Steve Shaw for Child of Glass.

This leaves me picking 1977 where I would select Gilles Budin in Blue Jeans over Brian Painchaud in Who Has Seen the Wind and Lars Söderdahl in The Brothers Lionheart.

Getting a tad difficult now...

1976:
Greg Rowe in "Storm Boy"
Chris barnes in "Bad news Bears"
Lele Dorazio in Elvis! Elvis!
Robert Bettles in "Let the balloon go" and "Ride a wild pony"
Simon Burke in "The devil's playground"
Norman Knox  and Muntu Noebele in  "e' Lollipop"
Paolo Pavesi  and Roberto Maccanti in "1900"
Andrew Harrison in "The Littlest horse thieves"

--------------------------------------------------------------------

backtracking a little:

My favourite boy movie performances 1979:
David Bennent in "The tin drum"
Ricky Schroeder  in "The champ"
Justin Henry in "Kramer v Kramer"

I can't separate those three outstanding performances... GREAT year!

My favourite boy actors 1979:
Matthew Laborteaux  in "Little house on the prairie" TVS
Noah Hathaway in "Battlestar Galactica" TVS
Ricky Schroder in "The champ"
Shane Butterworth in "The bad news bears" TVS

My favourite boy movie performances 1978:
(not a strong year but these three actors gave what are my preferred performances)
Riton Liebman in "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs"
Tomas Holy in "Jak dostat tatinka do polepsovny"/"Pod Jezevci skalou"
Larry B. Scott  in "A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich"

however...
My favourite boy actors  of 1978 were:
Peter Bjerg in 'You are not alone"
Shane Sinutko in "Soup and me" TV
Matthew Laborteaux in "Little house on the prairie" TVS
Patrick Laborteaux  in "Little house on the prairie" TVS
Chris Barnes in  "Tut and Tuttle"

1977:
My favourite boy movie performance:
Samy Ben-Youb in "Madam Rosa"
runner up:  Gilles Budin in  "Blue jeans"
supporting performance: Fabrizio Forte in "Padre padrone"
special mention:
Tomás Holý  in "At zijí duchové"/ "Jak vytrhnout velrybe stolicku"/"Setkání v cervenci"
Tomás was a very good actor, I'd have to rewatch these movies to decide which was better.

My favourite boy actors of 1977:
Lars Söderdahl in "The Brothers Lionheart"
Shane Sinutko in a guest role on "Quincy" TVS
Gilles Budin in  "Blue jeans"
Patrick Laborteaux in "Little House on the Prairie" TVS
Chris Barnes in "Bad News Bears in Breaking Training"

1976 was an Australian year for me. My vote would have been for Robert Bettles in Let the Balloon Go followed by Greg Rowe in Storm Boy. Chris Barnes is my hands down supporting performer of the year.

1975 offered me a lean list of candidates to choose from. I select Laurence Fishburne in Cornbread, Earl and Me.

My picks for the 70s years so far:

1979: David Bennent in The Tin Drum (but Zab's pick from Over the Edge would be a close runner-up)
1978: (see my post above)
1977: Samy Ben Youb in La Vie devant soi -- excellent movie, highly recommended. And probably one of my all-time favourite performances also.
1976: Only film I can think of from this year is 1900, and the two lead boys in the first part are both good.
1975: Again, I haven't seem much here, so I'd have to go with Chris Rebello in Jaws.

And my pick for 1974:

Alfred Lutter in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

Some good  choices are up there.  But also some of the best were missed.  Movies where the boy was the main character ...

1976 Guillaume le Vacher

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

1975 Jeffrey Lynas

Paul-Eric Shulmann
