Siberiade DVD - a few caps

aka  Sibiriada (1979)

I saw this on TV many years ago. I made these quick caps  from the DVD release. The film is best compared to Bernardo Bertolucci's "Novecento" which was released two or three years earlier.

Directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, who also collaborated on at least two films profiled on BA, "The Steamroller and the Violin" and the masterful "Ivan's Childhood".

It's not a boy movie, but there are some impressive scenes which feature boys, none the least of which is the presence of, according to my records, Misha Baburov, as the young Nikolai. He's the main focus in the first chapter of the saga.

Got this on DVD but still haven't watched it yet, it's on my "to watch" list so might dig it out on the weekend Smiley

btw cant remember which website I read this on but apparently they had to use two actors for one scene due to the cold weather, iirc it was the girl who was also in that scene who was explaining it.

That's an attention getter! Yipes, Siberia. They must grow the boys tough there.

Yeah, these pics caught my attention right away. The boy is super cute. I mean adorable. Seriously. I love that beautiful blond hair. And did I mention that the boy is adorable. Oh yeah. I did. These got my attention for other reasons too but I'll just leave that alone and say thanks for the great pics of the super cute little guy and for the info.   Cool

Ditto what everyone has said... and NO, I don't speak enough Russian to make out what's going on, but this kid is a reason to at least START watching it!

PS. What are you lookin' at, lady? (move aside!)

DVD has English Subtitles. The film is very impressive with or without the boy actors, so well worth watching from a movie lover's perspective.

4 hours, 20 minutes on 2 DVD discs! Well, Netflix won't be getting this one back for a long time.  Wink

Looks fine, so far. Color and production values are first rate.

I'm glad I stuck with it. Pretty tedious going for me at times, some odd editing, but a powerful overall experience. The final scene is a knockout.

I got it... haven't seen it yet, though.  Thanks for the reminder (and the note about it being worth it if I start to think it's getting tedious).

I have seen it and I consider it a great movie. If you liked this movie you will like Detskey sad (Kindergarten). Another Russian epic that definitely IS a boy movie, including nude sauna scene. Excellent movie.

Hopefully Detskey sad (Kindergarten) will be released on DVD one day. I prefer it to Siberiade and regard it as a boy move classic. It would be in my pack of 100 essential boy movies.
