Very impressive Phenom.

I always found any sort of skates too difficult to master beyond the very basic, skating round a rink at a cautious speed. I felt much more comfortable on skis, and falling over on snow doesn't hurt.

Yeah, Breaksk8 is a very impressive skate crew and they have been doing a lot recently to give our sport more public attention. They did a great job on the show and ended up getting more gigs on television and have been doing a tour of the U.S.

I've never tried to ski or snowboard nor do I live anywhere near any ski resorts otherwise I would be doing that too.

I don't know who "they" are, but I've used that expression. Usually to refer to music, though. Like, "Did you go to that show last night? The band was sick!"

Yeah, I even used to use 'sick' back in the late 70s, early 80s as meaning very cool in a kind of radical sense. It's a term that's been around for a few decades. There were many such expressions and I guess there always will be. 'Groovy', 'Far Out', 'Cool', 'Radical', 'Wicked', 'Right On', 'Awesome', plenty more that I've probably forgotten. I don't know what terms are actually 'in' at the moment, but I still use 'Cool' a LOT, and get a tad annoyed when kids think they have exclusive rights to it's usage. heh.

Yeah... I know.  I'm sure I'ved used all those terms, including "sick."  Funny thing is, I think "sick" can also mean "bad" (bad as in BAD, not bad as in GOOD {lol}) - at least for ME it can) ... so in order to remove some ambiguity, I decided to make sure everyone knew I meant "awesome" !

Edit:  And that new one with MJ's "Beat It" is pretty sick too!

It all depends on context and intonation.

True. I don't remember hearing it back in the day but maybe it wasn't a big term used in L.A. The spelling of the term as used today is "SIC."

Oh, and Breaksk8 is competing on America's Got Talent. I saw them on it last night. They made it through the auditions and went on to Las Vegas but they have to battle against two other dance crews tonight to see which dance crew is going to go on to the next round in Hollywood. However Piers has already expressed his prejudice against the skaters. He stated that he liked their act or dancing with the exception of the skates. Hello, their name is Breaksk8 not Break. Duh. I hope they make it through to the next round. I'm sure they will if the judges leave any prejudice out of it. They are very experienced at doing battles against other skate and dance crews and have gone up against the best and won before. Either way the upside is that America's Got Talent is a huge show with a large audience so it is giving our sport a lot more exposure in front of the general public.

Their is a video up on JSO (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) from the Today Show on a burger franchise called Sonic Drive-In that serves burgers the old fashioned way...on Rollerskates. A friend of mine that is also a jamskater works for the company setting up Sonic Drive-In's all over the country. I would definitely love to see these 50's era burger places come back.

I doubt it. Everyone I know spells it "sick." I wonder what etymology could justify spelling it "sic." It's definitely not related to the verb "to sic" (as in, "sic the dogs on him!") and even less so to the Latin usage to point out someone else's mistake in writing.

More likely, it's derived from other terms that are used to denote coolness/hipness, like "ill".

The alternative spelling you mention could be a variant that evolved from "sick," though, in the same way that "fat" because "phat" or "dog" became "dawg."

Yeah, it's probably the later. Who knows the logic behind the spelling but that is what it is (sic). But where do most of these terms evolve from. Kids and teenagers so consider the source.  Cheesy

Well, according to you.

I'm going to continue to spell it "sick." I can find tons of references to that spelling online.

For example:

I'm just telling you how I see people using the term. It's no big deal to me one way or another. It's not really germain to this thread.

Breaksk8 had to battle against two other dance crews tonight for a spot into the Top-40 on America's Got Talent and move on to the Quarter-Finals. Well, Breaksk8 totally SMASHED the other two crews and as the judges eluded to clearly out performed the other two crews. They are going on to the Quarter-Finals in Hollywood.

Weather or not they make it to the finals and win the whole thing or not to may of us in the sport is not a big a deal. The thing that is most important is that this show and Breaksk8's performances on the show are giving our sport it's biggest audience and exposure to date. Hopefully it will give our sport and rollerskating another big shot in the arm and get more people into the roller rinks, roller skating, and more specifically into jamskating. This is a real big deal for our sport. Good times.  Cool
