Movie Rentals

I am sure most people have already heard of all the recent mass closures of movie rental stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. Personally, I was a member of Hollywood Video but now with the closure of all of the stores around me I haven't been able to rent anything for months.

I am considering signing up for Netflix as it is one of the few alternatives left for renting videos and the price seems reasonable and you can get them two ways. If anybody in here is a member and can give me any heads-up on this service I would appreciate the input. However, I do have a couple of immediate questions for everyone.

First, with either the DVD's you receive in the mail or the movies you download to your computer do they have any code embedded in them that makes the movie self-destruct after a set amount of time. Naturally I like to make my own copy to add to my personal library.

Second, can anyone give me the names of good boy movies that they know by experiance are available with Netflix. Especially hard to find boy movies that you normally can't find in the regular video stores.

Thanks.  Smiley

I have been with Netflix many years.  The DVD you get from them is the same as one you would get from a bricks-and-mortar rental store.  It does not self-destruct.  (Of course copying is claimed to be illegal, but if you did it with rentals you can do it with Netflix.)   In fact, with Netflix you keep it longer with no late fee.  It's just that they send your next movie only when you return the one you have.

Netflix has most movies available on DVD in the US.  (Or Canada if you live there...) More than any one bricks-and-mortar rental store is likely to have.

For the record, Netflix is not available in Canada. At least, not to my knowledge, unless it's a very recent development.

In Canada, the closest service we have in terms of quality and selection is Zip.ca. It's pretty decent, but it's NOWHERE near as complete as Netflix. I know several members here rent from Netflix, and it happens very often that I see them mentioning DVDs they rented from Netflix, then I check Zip.ca and find that it's not even in the database.

If you live in the US, Netflix seems like the only logical way to go about renting films. I can't imagine doing it any other way when it's got such an amazing selection.

Zip.ca is what I use. And all things considered, it's still a better selection than any single local store I could go to. And it averages out to being cheaper, and it's more convenient. But a lot of the DVDs they have for rent are extremely difficult to get your hands on. I had The Italian at #1 on my list for almost a year before they finally sent it to me. I'm assuming that's because they only have a few copies of those DVDs and if several people have them on their list, it's going to take a while to get them. But if you don't care too much about specific titles, it's great. And I've never heard anybody from the US complain about similar problems from Netflix.

Making a list of boy movies available on Netflix would take too long and not be very useful. Pretty much any DVD that's been released in North America is available, so just look at the database and go nuts.

I've been using Netflix for 4 or 5 years and it is a great service. I have little to add. They also have a huge selection of 'International' titles such as 'Let The Right One in' and the recent Iranian title "The Song of Sparrows'.

They recently cut a deal with the big studios to hold off availability of rentals on new releases for 30 days after official release of DVDs. This does not bother me at all and probly not most other renters.

I suppose I should clean out my wallet and get rid of those old membership cards from rental stores!

Oh, I should add that the turn-around time for mailed returns and delivery of new titles is very fast. I usually mail returns on a Sunday night and get the next DVDs by Wednesday. The Postal Service, as it does with many other volume mailers, treats Netflix mail almost as if it were priority mail.

Hey. Thanks guys. Yeah, I've been bummin for a while since everybody folded up shop around town and I couldn't find anything to rent. I finally took another big step into the 21st Century and signed up for Netflix. At $8.99/mo you can't beat it. I choose that version because I only need to order one hard copy DVD at a time for stuff I want to add to my collection since you can stream movies to your TV and watch as many as you want. Since I have a new digital entertainment system with my newer computer hooked up to my new HDTV I can stream media directly to my TV. I just watched Second Best and it worked perfect. I assume that since they have that movie digitally available to stream they must have it on DVD. So I'm gonna try and add that to my collection since it is only available most places on VHS and my VHS player took a crap last year and isn't worth replacing.

I remember that last year everybody posted a list of their favorite boy movies so if anyone knows the link to their posts could you put the link in this thread so I can see what I can find on Netflix.

Thanks.

Though most of the responses are a few years old, this thread is worth looking into for films to seek out.
