I just came across a preview for Tokyo Sonata on a disk I had rented. Inowaki looks very cute and I was enchanted by the brief cut of his beautiful piano playing.

Searching, I found discussions of the film by Zab and JosephK as well as your mention of it here. It looks like one I want to see, even if the boy is not the main focus.

I wanted to mention, also, that the film can be had from Netflix and is now for sale at Amazon.

Highly recommended from me. This is a great movie. Though the boy is not the sole focus of the story, he still has more than enough screen time to make it worth checking out.

Looks interesting. I wonder if Inowaki actually plays the piano. Probably not if he's just an actor as there aren't many boy piano players around who can tackle the classics.

I don't remember if it looked like he was really playing or not in the movie.

From the movie's official website:

Born on November 24, 1995, Kai Inowaki began acting at age 10. With a series of TV appearances under his belt, Inowaki has steadily been gaining experience from a young age. Inowaki’s starring role as the rebellious youngest son who develops a passion for playing piano in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s TOKYO SONATA marks the actor’s major breakthrough into international cinema. Inowaki’s other talents include basketball, swimming, baseball and dance. Inowaki recently entered middle school, and plans to continue acting in films and TV in the future.

From IMDb message board:

Co-producer, Yuki Kito, spoke at the film's opening at the Music Box in Chicago and answered this question. The child was a piano student, but not as good as the film required. He was told he would have to practice this piece ("Claire de Lune") for visual effect, at least. They decided to use another 12-year-old pianist for the sound track. Ms. Kito said it was a good match.
